If your manual transmission vehicle has a dead battery, you can start it by pressing and quickly releasing the clutch.

Steps

  1. 1 Put the car in second gear and fully depress the clutch.
  2. 2 Turn the key to the on position.
  3. 3 Ask someone to push the car, and if you're lucky and you're on a hill, just let it roll.
  4. 4 While the car is moving, release the clutch and immediately press on the gas. The engine should work and you should be able to use the car again! Just don't let it die out.

Tips

  • It is the second gear that is used, as the engine starting will be much smoother, without jerking, which will reduce clutch and gearbox wear. However, if the distance is very short or your speed is too slow, it may be better to use first gear.
  • Release the clutch very quickly; if you do this gradually, the engine will not start.
  • If it doesn't work the first time, try again and try to go a little faster before releasing the clutch.

Warnings

  • Make sure the person pushing the vehicle stops when you try to start the engine. There have been cases of people breaking their wrists due to a sudden stop of the car.
  • When the engine is not running, the brake booster does not work, so be careful if you are on a hill and do not lose control of the vehicle.
