Steps
1 Replace the vehicle fuel filter. One of the most important basic maintenance procedures for your new car (expensive or cheap) is replacing the fuel filter. This can be done by locating the filter, removing the old one and replacing it with a new one. If you do not know where it is, look for information about it in the owner's manual of the car. This can be important if your vehicle does not have a fuel injection system. If it is, it can be cleaned on occasion or when the injectors become clogged. 
2 Replace the vehicle spark plugs. The spark plugs should also be checked and, if required, replaced. Spark plugs are vital to a car's fuel combustion mechanism, so it is important to keep them in good working order. If one of the spark plugs is out of order, the engine may start to stall; to prevent this, replace them regularly. 
3 Use only quality spark plugs as replacements. There are so-called platinum spark plugs that can provide up to 70,000 additional miles before replacement. It is also recommended to replace the high voltage spark plug wires for best results. When doing this, use only high quality wires. 
4 Replace the capacitor and ignition contacts. If you have an older car model with a contact ignition system, you need to change the contacts and the capacitor every 6 months. When replacing them, also check the ignition timing, make sure that the car is working properly. 
5 Make sure the injectors are correctly adjusted The engine injectors should also be adjusted regularly, unless the vehicle has hydraulic injectors. If you see traces of oil on the top of the valve cover gasket, try replacing it. 
6 Change the oil regularly. Finally, you need to change your oil regularly. You can do this every 5000 kilometers. Also check and clean the air filter when changing the oil. Change the air filter every 25,000 km.
