If you are looking for a greener, more economical alternative to commercial fabric conditioners, you can make your own at home. Let's talk about several methods of making air conditioners that you can use.

Steps

Method 1 of 5: Vinegar

  1. 1 Mix 4 liters of vinegar with 25-30 drops of essential oil. Stir the essential oil directly into a container of distilled white vinegar. Stir for a minute or so for the two liquids to mix well.
    • Note that the use of essential oil is optional. It is the vinegar that is responsible for softening the fabric. It washes away the remains of substances that make fabric rough from clothes, and it also breaks down some minerals in tap water.
    • If you decide to use an essential oil, you can choose any scent you like.
  2. 2 Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) of the product to the rinse cycle. For a normal machine load, fill the fabric softener drawer with 1/4 cup (60 ml) of fabric softener, or add the same amount directly to the washing machine just before the rinse cycle.
    • Do not add softener to the washing machine before the main wash cycle.
    • Store leftover fabric softener in a container. It must be signed so that you do not mistakenly use the tool for other purposes. Shake or stir the solution well before each use so that the vinegar and essential oils do not separate.
  3. 3 Perform a standard rinse cycle. You don't need to do anything special. Let the rinse cycle end as usual.

Method 2 of 5: Vinegar and baking soda

  1. 1 Mix baking soda with hot water. Thoroughly mix 1 cup (250 ml) baking soda with 2 cups (500 ml) hot water. Use a large bucket or other container to mix the two.
    • Note that the baking soda will not dissolve, but it should get completely wet.
    • This homemade air conditioner is very much appreciated by those with hard tap water.
    • Baking soda regulates the pH level of your tap water, preventing excess acidity or alkalinity. It also removes minerals from hard water. It is minerals that often cause the harshness of washed clothes.
  2. 2 Pour in the vinegar slowly. Slowly add 1 cup (250 ml) white distilled vinegar to the solution. Stir the solution gently until the baking soda dissolves.
    • Vinegar will react violently with baking soda. Don't pour in the vinegar too quickly, or it will end up in a big mess.
    • Vinegar helps wash away soap and dirt from clothes and also helps soften hard water.
    • Some people think that vinegar and baking soda neutralize each other, making them ineffective. However, the resulting salt serves as a buffer for the rinse cycle. Moreover, many of the elements remaining after the reaction help to soften the fabric.
  3. 3 Add perfume to the conditioner if desired. If you want a flavored conditioner, you need to add an essential oil or fragrance to it. In any case, the substance must be directly added to the conditioner and stirred.
    • When using essential oils, 25-30 drops should be sufficient.
    • If using flavoring, add 1/4 - 1/2 cup (60 - 125 ml) of powder and stir until dissolved.
    • The fragrance can be found in the household chemicals section. It is not a natural product, so it is not preferable to use it from an environmental point of view, but it will give your air conditioner a pleasant smell and help save money in the long term.
  4. 4 Add 1/4 cup (60 ml) rinse cycle conditioner to the washing machine. If the machine is normally loaded, fill the rinse aid compartment with 1/4 cup (60 ml) of fabric softener, or add the same amount directly to the washing machine just before starting the rinse cycle.
    • Do not add softener to the machine before the main wash cycle.
    • Pour leftover fabric softener into a storage container. Shake or stir well before each use.
  5. 5 Start the rinse cycle as usual. From now on, nothing special is required of you. Let the rinse cycle finish as usual.

Method 3 of 5: Hair Conditioner

  1. 1 Combine vinegar, hair conditioner, and hot water. In a large bucket or container, thoroughly mix 3 cups (750 ml) white distilled vinegar, 2 cups (500 ml) hair conditioner, and 6 cups (1500 ml) hot water.
    • Any hair conditioner can be used with this method. To minimize costs, go for the cheapest brand.
    • Since there are many variations of air conditioners with different scents on the market, your choice of scent is almost limitless.
    • Note that this is not a completely natural solution, but it is still quite effective. The vinegar will wash away the rough substances and the fabric softener will soften.
  2. 2 Add 1/4 - 1/2 cup (60 - 125 ml) to the washing machine just before rinsing. If the washing machine is normally loaded, fill the rinse aid compartment with 1/4 - 1/2 cups (60 - 125 ml) of solution or add it directly to the washing machine before starting the rinse cycle.
    • Do not add fabric softener to the washing machine before starting the main wash cycle.
    • Pour the rest of the product into a storage container. Shake or stir the conditioner well before each use.
  3. 3 Start the rinse cycle as usual. You don't need to do anything special. Allow the rinse cycle to end normally.

Method 4 of 5: Softening Cloths

  1. 1 Cut the cotton fabric into small squares. Cut a clean cotton cloth into squares with a side of about 13 cm.
    • Cotton is a natural breathable fabric. Avoid using fabrics that are too thick or synthetics.
    • You can take an old rag or piece of clothing for this purpose, but the material must be clean.
  2. 2 Sprinkle each square with white vinegar. Fill a small spray bottle with distilled white vinegar. Sprinkle the squares on both sides until the fabric is dampened.
    • Let dry a little. The fabric may be damp, but should not drip off by the time you place it in the dryer.
    • In this case, vinegar is the only element that softens the fabric. The method may not be as effective as the vinegar liquid conditioner, but there will still be little effect.
  3. 3 Add a few drops of essential oil to each wedge. Place 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil on each square. Spread the drops all over the piece so that they evenly saturate it.
    • The essential oil will give your clothes a pleasantly soft scent. Technically, you can not use essential oil, but since the softening effect of this method is less pronounced than that of liquid conditioners, it makes sense to take advantage of the possibility of additional deodorization and imparting aroma to clothes.
  4. 4 Place the scented shreds in the dryer. Place the scented fabric softener in the dryer with the clothes prepared to dry. Start a standard drying cycle. You don't need to do anything special from now on.
    • Each wedge can be used for 2-3 dryings, but you may need to revive the scent by adding 3 or more drops of essential oil to it before drying. You can restore the softening properties by sprinkling vinegar on the wedge again.

Method 5 of 5: Crystalline Fabric Conditioner

  1. 1 Mix coarse salt and essential oil. Add 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oil to 2 cups (500 ml) Epsom salt or coarse sea salt in a medium bowl or container.
    • Stir well to distribute and absorb the essential oil evenly.
    • Any essential oil can be used. If you wish, you can even combine scents to create a unique fragrance.
  2. 2 Stir in baking soda. Add ½ cup (125 ml) of baking soda to the flavored salt and stir until smooth.
    • Alternatively, instead of adding baking soda, add it separately to the washing machine when washing.
  3. 3 Add 2 - 3 tablespoons (30 - 45 ml) in the rinse cycle. Before the washing machine starts the rinse cycle, add the flavored crystals directly to the washing machine water.
    • Use only 2 - 3 tablespoons (30 - 45 ml) of crystal conditioner.
    • If you didn't add baking soda to salt, you can add up to 1/2 cup (125 ml) of baking soda per wash in addition to crystals.
    • Do not add crystalline softener before the main wash. Add it only to the rinse cycle.
  4. 4 Run the rinse cycle as usual. You don't need to do anything special from now on. Allow the rinse cycle to complete normally.

  • Don't use apple cider vinegar or other colored vinegar. It can stain or stain clothing, and it can darken.
