If you don't want to use beeswax or don't already have beeswax, you can still make great lip balms! Coconut oil, shea butter, honey and castor oil can all be used in different proportions to make lip balm. Try making a simple lip balm with honey and coconut oil or shea butter, for example. You can also use gelatin powder to make a lipstick or as a moisturizer using a combination of oil and butter.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Make a simple honey lip balm

  1. Place 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of shea butter or coconut oil in a saucepan. You can use twice as much material if you want to make more lipstick. You can also use a water-bath steamer, the one with a steamer rack placed on top of the pot underneath for boiling water. Take care not to let the water in the pot reach the bottom of the steamer. The steamer will help the oil or butter heat up slowly and won't burn.
    • You can also put the ingredients in a heat-resistant bowl and heat them in the microwave.
    • Shea butter has a better moisturizing effect because it contains vitamin E, but coconut oil also has a very good moisturizing effect.

  2. Heat shea butter on the lowest heat. Since you only use a very small amount of shea butter, it is very easy to burn. When cooking butter, be on the lookout and keep the heat as low as possible. Don't let the butter or coconut oil bubble, just let it melt.
    • If using the microwave, start cooking for about 10 seconds then check, stir and cook for another 5 seconds.

  3. Add 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of raw honey and 4-5 drops of essential oil. Remove the shea butter from the stove and wait 2-3 minutes for the butter to cool. Add honey and essential oils, stirring until they blend together.
    • You can use peppermint, rose or citrus essential oils.
    • If you don't want to use honey, you can take the same amount of castor oil, a vegetable oil. Honey has a moisturizing and exfoliating effect on the lips; Castor oil is very hydrating and helps reduce chapped lips.
    • Instead of using essential oils, you can add a little cinnamon powder to your lipstick.

  4. Fill the jar with lip balm and let cool. You can use old lipstick peels or existing small bottles or jars, such as old mint jars, baby food jars or old medicine bottles. Wait overnight for the lipstick to cool and thicken.
    • You can store the lip balm at room temperature for a few months.

Method 2 of 3: Make a fruit gelatin lip balm

  1. Microwave 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of coconut oil. Start boiling for 15 seconds, if the oil still does not melt, you will cook for about 5 seconds. Coconut oil needs to be hot enough to dissolve and activate gelatin. They will not blend together if they are still solid. You can also use coconut oil and oil wax in equal proportions.
    • You should stir gently to dissolve the coconut oil.
    • Coconut oil has a moisturizing effect, while the oil wax helps lock in moisture very well.
  2. Mix 2 teaspoons (about 6g) of gelatin powder you like. Add the powder while the oil is still hot and stir well. The heat dissolves the gelatin and helps the lipstick to harden.
    • You can use whatever flavor you like, but be aware that gelatin will give the lip balm a slight coloration. A raspberry, cherry or strawberry flavor gives a pinkish red color. If you want a bit of a break, you can use the grape flavor for purple lip balm or use blue raspberries for a bright blue lipstick. If you want to make colorless lip balm, use tasteless gelatin.
    • You can also use unsweetened gelatin, but use a little less. Try it out to find the right dose!
    • The main function of gelatin is to help thicken lipstick, in addition to the protein in gelatin also offers many other benefits.
  3. Add 6-8 drops of essential oil to add fragrance to the lipstick. Although not required, this step will give the lipstick a more unique flavor. For example, try adding lemon or mint oil with raspberry flavor, grapefruit oil with cherry or orange oil with grape gelatin and mix well.
    • Most citrus essential oils have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
  4. Pour mixture into small jars to thicken. You can use an old lipstick case or a small bottle of any kind, such as a baby food jar. Put the mixture in the refrigerator to cool for about 2-3 hours if you want the lipstick to freeze quickly or you can leave the lipstick outside overnight. When the lipstick cools and thickens, it can be used.
    • If you want to pour lipstick into multiple lipsticks, you can use an elastic band to tie the lipsticks together, this will make it easier to pour.
    • The lip balm can be stored for several months at room temperature because there is no water in the ingredients. However, if the lipstick smells strange or has mold, throw it out.

Method 3 of 3: Make a mixed moisturizer

  1. Place castor oil, shea butter and coconut oil in a saucepan. You will use castor oil and shea butter each with 1 tablespoon (15 ml), 2 tablespoons coconut oil (30 ml) and pour it all into a saucepan.
    • If you want, you can replace castor oil with the same amount of oil wax. Oil wax has a good moisturizing effect, castor oil can help with chapped or dehydrated environments. Both shea butter and coconut oil help moisturize, but shea butter contains vitamin E, which is good for the skin.
    • If you don't want shea butter, you can add more coconut oil.
    • You can also microwave these oils in the microwave, if so, pour the ingredients into the microwave bowl.
  2. Heat a saucepan over low heat to melt the oils. When the oil starts to heat up, stir gently occasionally to allow the heat to dissipate evenly. Lift the saucepan and turn off the heat when the coconut oil and shea oil have melted and blended.
    • If using the microwave, start cooking for 15-10 seconds and check. Heat for another 5 seconds if the oils have not dissolved and blended.
  3. After lifting the saucepan, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. Use about 10-15 drops of citrus essential oil, such as grapefruit, lemon or orange, for a summer lip balm. If you like floral scents, try lavender or rose oil.
    • Citrus essential oils have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
    • Clove and cinnamon essential oils are also very fragrant, but you should only use a few drops. These essential oils build up a strong odor very quickly and have a warming effect on the lips.
    • If you don't have essential oils, you can use 1/4 pack of fruit powder, such as Kool-Aid or Crystal Light, to give your lipstick color and flavor.
    • For a natural color, add teaspoon (1.5 grams) of beets powder.
  4. Pour the lipstick into a small bottle and let it cool. You can use old lipstick peels, small mint jars or other small bottles. Let the lipstick cool overnight or put the lipstick in the fridge to cool it down.
    • When the lipstick cools and thickens, it can be used.
    • The lipstick can be stored for several months at room temperature.

Advice

  • If you don't have coconut oil, you can use shea butter, cocoa butter or oil wax.
  • You can use extracts such as vanilla extracts instead of essential oils, although these extracts may not dissolve very well.
