Orange is a secondary color, made from a combination of red and yellow, with different amounts of each color producing different shades of orange. If you understand basic color theory, you should be able to apply the principle to a variety of agents, including paint, icing and polymer clay.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Using color theory

  1. Prepare a few samples. Prepare at least four bowls. Spoon about 60 ml of the finished white icing into each bowl.
    • You can make orange icing in a variety of ways, but each one requires a base of white icing. You will need at least four servings of white icing, but if you have six or twelve, there is more to experiment.
    • You need at least four different food coloring: orange, red, yellow, and black. You could also use shades of red and yellow for more experimentation.
    • Ideally, you use food coloring agents in paste, powder or gel form, which are specially designed for icing. Avoid liquid dyes, as these often have a negative effect on the consistency of the enamel.
  2. Purchase different shades of clay. Ideally, you have at least two types of red clay, two yellow clays, a white clay, a translucent clay, and a black clay.
    • Also try to have a warm red clay (with a hint of orange) and a cool red clay (with a hint of violet).
    • Likewise, you can also go after a warm yellow clay (with a hint of orange) and a cool yellow clay (with a hint of green).
    • You can of course use more than two shades of red and yellow, but if you have at least two you can see the principle and understand how it works.
  3. Darken the orange. Prepare another sample of your favorite orange clay. Pull off a small piece of black clay and mix it through the sample until you don't see any color glands with it.
    • The resulting orange will have the same shade, but the black has given it a darker tone. This can make the orange look a little brownish.
    • Black clay can have a dramatic effect on other clay colors, including orange, so work with very small amounts to avoid darkening the tone.
