Smoke bombs are serious business. You should only deal with it if you are willing to handle hazardous materials, such as gunpowder. These smoke bombs will have a similar effect to movies, for some fun and mischief. Smoke bombs can be crafted in different strengths, so choose the bomb that you feel most comfortable with.

Method 1 of 2: Make a smoke bomb

1. Gather the supplies. You can also use this refill for a standard wick bomb. You need a digital scale, KNO3 (potassium nitrate), powdered sugar, gloves, ice cream sticks or other stirrers and a durable cup.
   • You also need something to shape the liquefied powders, such as a cardboard toilet or paper towel.
   • KNO3 can be purchased in larger DIY stores. If you have trouble finding it, you can also search hobby stores and online.
   • The best gloves for this type of project are rubber gloves.
   • Wear eye protection and cover your skin. These precautions are especially important when heating the chemicals. Also wear thick, rubber gloves.
   • You will also need the following things for the housing: paper toy shooting balls, a Stanley knife, tape and gunpowder. Paper shooting balls are the ammunition for toy guns.
   • Gunpowder can often be found in sports stores that also sell pistols. If it is difficult to find, check the internet.
2. Measure out the powders. Use 70 grams of KNO3 and 30 grams of sugar. After you measure the powders, put them in the cup and mix well.
3. Heat the mixture. Use a heat plate on the middle position. Wear gloves and stir frequently to prevent the mixture from burning. Keep heating and stirring until the mixture becomes liquid and turns light brown.
   • Beware of combustion! If you are not careful, the mixture can burn and go up in smoke.
4. Move to an enclosure. Put the liquefied mixture in the housing of your choice. Use something small so you can use your smoke bombs on the go. The best kind of housing is something that you can remove once the mixture has set, such as a cardboard toilet roll. You can also use a roll of film, one that you have to develop.
5. Let the mixture harden. Allow several hours for the mixture to harden. If you want to be extra careful, you can place the mixture in the fridge or freezer. This mixture takes a little over an hour to cool in the freezer.
6. Place the balls. Put a small piece of masking tape on the edge of a ball and attach it to the top of the KNO3 mass. Then wrap the outside of the hardened mixture full with the balls. When the surface is completely covered, fix them with masking tape.
7. Prepare the gunpowder. Cut two strips of masking tape slightly larger than the KNO3 mass. Place 1 strip perpendicularly over the first piece of tape, creating a cross. Do this with the adhesive edge facing up. Sprinkle the gunpowder over the adhesive tape cross.
   • Try to keep the outer edge of the tape free.
8. Attach the adhesive tape. Now that you've prepared the tape cross with gunpowder, you can finish. Take the KNO3 mass covered in toy balls and wrap it in the crotch. The cross should fit easily around the bomb. Once you get rid of all the air bubbles, you're done.
   • Forcibly throw the smoke bomb outdoors onto a hard surface, such as cement.

Method 2 of 2: Using the smashing technique

1. Gather the supplies. You need a separate housing for this, which you can make from smooth paper or something else, such as tissues. You need popping stones and magnesium powder for the filling.
   • Magnesium powder can be found in some hobby stores and on the Internet. Make sure not to use magnedium citrate, as this is a dietary supplement.
2. Combine the materials. Combine the popping stones with the magnesium on a piece of paper. For a good smoke bomb you need 3 or 4 popping stones and a teaspoon of magnesium powder.
3. Wrap the materials in the housing. Finish the task by combining the 2 ingredients in the enclosure of your choice. You can just use tissues if you can't find anything else in the house. Once the materials are covered, seal the case tightly. When you're done with that, throw it on a hard surface, you should see a flash and smoke, combined with a bang!
   • You can use tape or glue to seal the smoke bomb.
