If iPhone is locked and you don't know the passcode or password, reset your smartphone to factory settings. This will delete all user data, but you can restore it if you have a backup copy of the device. You can reset a locked iPhone using iTunes, Find My iPhone, or recovery mode.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Using iTunes

  1. 1 Connect iPhone to computer via USB cable. Connect your smartphone to the computer on which you synced iPhone with iTunes. Once the system recognizes the smartphone, iTunes will automatically launch.
    • If iTunes requires you to enter a code, or if you have not previously synced iPhone with iTunes on this computer, go to the third section (it describes how to reset in recovery mode).
  2. 2 Wait for iTunes to sync your smartphone with your computer and create a backup.
    • If iTunes does not automatically sync iPhone, click the smartphone icon in the iTunes window and click Sync.
  3. 3 When the synchronization and backup process is complete, click "Restore".
  4. 4 When the options for the restore process open, select the "Restore from iTunes backup" option.
  5. 5 In the iTunes window, select your iPhone and then click on the most recent backup. The smartphone settings will be reset (including the lock code / password) and user data will be restored.

Method 2 of 3: Using Find My iPhone

  1. 1 Go to iCloud website. This can be done on a mobile device or computer. Now, log in with your Apple ID and password.
    • Do not use this method if Find My iPhone is disabled. In this case, go to the third section (it describes how to do a factory reset in recovery mode).
  2. 2 Click All Devices at the top of the iCloud page and select your iPhone.
  3. 3 Click Erase. The smartphone settings will be reset (including the lock code / password) and user data will be deleted.
  4. 4 Restore user data using an iCloud backup, or follow the onscreen instructions to set up your device again.

Method 3 of 3: In recovery mode

  1. 1 Connect iPhone to computer via USB cable.
  2. 2 Launch iTunes. iTunes will recognize your smartphone within seconds.
    • If you don't have iTunes on your computer, download the latest version.
  3. 3 Press and hold the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons until the device enters recovery mode. This will happen when the Apple logo disappears from the screen.
  4. 4 Click "Restore". Do this when iTunes notifies you of a problem with your device. iTunes will download and install available software updates; it will take no more than 15 minutes.
    • If updates are downloaded for more than 15 minutes, the smartphone may exit recovery mode. In this case, repeat steps three and four.
  5. 5 Wait for the settings to be reset, then follow the onscreen instructions to set up your smartphone again.

Tips

  • Please visit the location where you entered your passcode / passcode before resetting your iPhone. Perhaps this step will help you remember the code. (If you entered the code in a certain place, then returning there, you can restore the code to memory.)

Warnings

  • Remember that the factory reset described in the third section will erase all user data. Therefore, first try entering different codes in order to still unlock the device and avoid losing personal data.
