Do you smoke or work in a greasy kitchen? Are you an athlete who sweats a lot? Do you expect that you will not be able to wash your hair for several days? If so, there are a number of ways you can keep your hair smelling good for a long time.

Method 1 of 3: Keeping odors out of your hair

  1. Wash your hair regularly. This may seem obvious, but it is essential, especially if your hair is oily. Oily hair generally picks up odors from the environment. Try to wash your hair every other day or at least twice a week.
  2. Stop smoking. Smoke can linger in your hair for a long time, and its smell is very difficult to cover. If you cannot quit smoking completely, try to smoke outside only, not in enclosed areas such as cars. If you live or work with people who smoke, do your best to avoid them while they smoke, or encourage them to do it outside.
  3. Cover your hair in bad-smelling environments. If you work in a kitchen or go to a party where you will be surrounded by smoke, try to cover your hair if you can. In a kitchen, wear a hair net, headscarf, or hat if your dress code allows it. For a party, choose a hat or a nice bandana.
    • If you can't cover your hair, pull it up into a bun; this will limit the amount of hair exposed to the fragrance.
  4. Wash your head coverings and pillowcases. Anything that comes into contact with your hair (hats, headscarves, helmets, rubber bands, headbands, and pillowcases) can pick up the scent from your hair when it is not clean and transfer it to your hair when it is clean again. Keep these things as clean as you can.
  5. Clean your hairbrush or comb. Especially when you use products that build up in your hair and on your brush, you may be forcing fragrances into your hair when you brush it. Try to clean your brushes and combs about once a week.
    • If there is so much hair in your brush that you can't pull it out with your hands, slide a pen or pencil underneath the hair in your brush and pull upward.
    • You can also use scissors to get problematic hairs out of your brush, just be careful not to damage the bristles. Insert the scissors into the brush parallel to the bristle rows.
    • For an extra clean brush, fill your sink with warm water and about a tablespoon of shampoo. After removing the hair, wash your brush in the sink, rinse it, and let it dry.
  6. Avoid sharing a brush with pets. Animal fungi grow on animals and can transfer themselves to humans. These fungi breed in warm, moist areas, so even if you wash your hair, you may not be able to remove them.
    • Sometimes animal fungus can be transferred to humans with very close contact, even if you do not share a brush with the animal.
    • If you think you got a fungus from an animal, see a doctor. You may need both an anti-fungal pill and anti-fungal shampoo.
  7. Use dry shampoo. Dry shampoo is made to absorb oil, as well as odors. Spray it liberally on your hair before coming into contact with fragrances. Make sure to apply it on all of your hair. After coming into contact with the scents, brush your hair well to help get them out of the hair.

Method 2 of 3: Add products to your hair to make it smell good

  1. Spray perfume on your hair or hairbrush. You can buy different perfumes made especially for her, which are your best option. You can also use regular perfumes every now and then, but since these are not made for hair, they can make your hair oily or dry, so don't overuse them.
    • Do not spray perfume that is not intended for hair directly on your hair. It may ruin your hairstyle, make your hair heavier, or leave an oily stain.
  2. Use essential oils. Many essential oils are anti-microbial and help you avoid scalp infections (which often lead to odorous hair). Tea tree oil, lavender oil, vanilla oil, and peppermint oil are all good options. Add 2-3 drops of it to 285ml of water and massage the mixture into your scalp. Let the mixture sit for about 20 minutes before shampooing your hair.
    • Alternatively, you can also add essential oils to your shampoo. Use about 2 drops per 30 ml of shampoo.
  3. Try scented hair sprays, serums, and dry shampoos. Especially if you are already using hair products, add a product to your routine that smells great. Fragrances from these products won't necessarily last all day, so consider keeping small touch-up bottles with you in your bag.
    • Some brands even make hair refresh sprays. Salt water sprays also work well for this and will not weigh down your hair.
  4. Use a deep conditioner about once every two weeks. Deep conditioners are made to keep your hair soft and prevent breakage, but they can also add wonderful scents to your hair. Most brands recommend that you use them every few weeks, but check the instructions for your product to make sure.
    • Heat your conditioner before use for an extra thorough clean. Place the sealed container in a sink full of hot water for about a minute before applying it to your hair.
    • Alternate between using a deep conditioner designed to moisturize hair (look for ingredients like softening butters and oils, glycerin, and aloe vera) and another deep conditioner designed to strengthen hair (look for hydrolyzed proteins, amino acids, keratin and henna).
  5. Make your own shampoo. Many beauty experts believe that store-bought shampoos remove the natural oils from your hair. One advantage of making your own shampoo is that you can make it smell how you want it! There are many recipes out there, but this is one that doesn't require too many hard-to-find ingredients. Mix the following ingredients and use the mixture like a normal shampoo:
    • 120 ml of distilled water
    • 60 ml liquid castile soap (soap made from plant oils)
    • 2 teaspoons of avocado oil
    • 1/8 of a teaspoon of peppermint essential oil
    • 1/8 of a teaspoon of tea tree essential oil
    • 10-15 drops of essential oil of your choice

Method 3 of 3: Using rinses to keep your hair smelling good

  1. Make a baking soda rinse. Baking soda can reduce the amount of oil in your hair and neutralize odors. Mix 60 ml baking soda and 175 ml water in a bowl or glass. This will make a paste. (Double these amounts if your hair extends beyond your shoulders). Wet your hair and apply the baking soda and water mixture. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, then shampoo your hair. Do this about once a week.
  2. Use rose water. Apply rose water directly to your hair. Massage the rose water into your scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then wash your hair as you normally would. The rose water will leave a lasting rose scent.
    • Rose water can have a drying effect, so don't use it too often.
  3. Rinse lemons. Lemons are a great way to keep your hair smelling fresh, and they also prevent dandruff. Shampoo your hair first. Squeeze 2 fresh lemons into 235ml of water, then massage the mixture into your hair. Leave the mixture on for up to 10 minutes, making sure to condition your hair after rinsing so that the juice doesn't dry out your hair.
    • Lemon juice is astringent and can dry out your hair.
    • Be aware that lemon juice can also generally lighten your hair and bring out the highlights, especially if you go out into the sun while the lemon juice is still in your hair.
    • You can also add essential oil to the lemon water mixture, but this is not necessary as lemons already have a very strong scent.

  • If nothing works, see a doctor. Sometimes hair that smells bad can be the result of an infection. If you experience other symptoms such as fever, chills, vomiting or rash, or if nothing helps to improve the smell of your hair, see a doctor. Sometimes odorous hair can also be the result of hormonal fluctuation.
