Natural stone, in particular granite, is a porous material and liquids can seep into the granite surface, resulting in stains. If you need to seal a granite surface, such as a countertop (to avoid staining), this guide will help you do it quickly and easily.

Steps

  1. 1 Perform a paper towel test to determine if your granite surface needs sealing. Some types of granite do not need to be sealed, and sealing such granite will only ruin it.
    • Dampen a paper towel (no pattern) or cotton towel with water. Place this towel on a granite surface and wait about 5 minutes.
    • Has the surface of the granite darkened under the paper towel because water has penetrated the granite? If the surface has changed color, then it needs to be sealed.
  2. 2 Clean the entire surface of the granite with a cleaner.
    • Wipe the surface with a paper towel and wait a couple of minutes. The surface must be completely dry.
  3. 3 Apply the sealant evenly to your granite surface. This should be done with a spray bottle or a clean white rag or brush.
  4. 4 Allow the sealant to soak into the stone for 20 to 25 minutes.
  5. 5 When the first coat of sealant is dry, apply some more sealant to the granite, then rub it onto the granite surface with a clean dry cloth.
  6. 6 Wait at least two hours and then reapply the sealant. The waiting time depends on the specific brand of sealant (see instructions).

Tips

  • Granite has a porous surface, clean the granite surface with a low Ph cleaner and allow it to dry completely before applying the sealant. Depending on the thickness and quality of your granite, you may need to dry it overnight.
  • The purpose of covering a surface with a sealant is to prevent the ingress of liquids. Sealant on granite when liquids (other than water) are absorbed into the stone. These "other" liquids can leave stubborn stains behind, these stains can become a home for germs and bacteria.
  • When treating granite surfaces with sealant, apply at least 2 coats of sealant.
  • Remember, if you are not using a permanent sealant, you will need to re-seal the granite with sealant every six months.
  • Granite countertops are sealed once every 2-3 years.
  • Make sure that after applying the sealant, the surface of the granite is completely sealed.

Warnings

  • Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Not all granite surfaces require a sealant treatment. In nature, there are only a couple of types of granite that are dense enough and do not need to be sealed, but even they are prone to etching. Therefore, almost all types of granite must be sealed if you want to protect them from anything that could potentially damage the surface of the granite.

What do you need
