The cushions of a worn-out couch that is often used can sag. Sagging sofa cushions are uncomfortable and unsightly. However, there are a few different ways you can overcome this problem with simple DIY techniques.

To step

Method 1 of 4: Refill the pillows

  1. Open the zipper of the cushions. Most sofa cushions, even those attached to the sofa frame, have zippers that open. Inside is the pillow.
    • If your sofa cushions don't have zippers, open them with a wire cutter.
  2. Add more filling to the sofa cushions. It is best to use batting or polyester fiber filling. Polyester fiber fill and batting can be found in craft stores or in and department stores that sell household items, such as the HEMA. Add more filling and spread it around to make it smooth and even. You can put it around the current sofa cushion, but inside the pillowcase. If it is badly worn, you may need to replace all of the filling.
    • If the cushions are filled with loose filling, fill them with polyester fiber filling. You don't have to remove any of the current filling from the pillows. Spread the new filling evenly with your hand.
    • If the filling is more like regular pillows, you can wrap them with batting. Take the pillow out of the pillowcase and wrap it in the batting. You can use adhesive spray (bought at a craft store) to attach the batting to the current pillow.
    • If the filling consists of one piece, you can also add loose filling. Spread the polyester fiber filling evenly around the pillow to keep the pillow from getting bumpy. Sprinkle the filling evenly around with your hand.
    EXPERT TIP

Zip them back up. Put the cushions back in the cushion covers and zip them closed. Shake them up well and put them back on the couch. They should now be fuller, more beautiful and more comfortable.

    • If you opened the cushions with a thread cutter, you will need to sew them back together after filling.

Method 2 of 4: Sewing buttons into the cushions

  1. Open the zipper of the pillow. If there is no zipper on the pillow, open it with a wire cutter. Take all the stuffing out of the pillow interior and set it aside.
  2. Get a needle, thread, and four buttons. Sew the four buttons on the sofa cushions, two on the front and two on the back. Use the same piece of thread to sew on all four buttons so that all four buttons are pinched by the thread.
    • You can also use more or less buttons depending on the size of the pillow. You may only need two buttons for a decorative cushion, but you probably need more for a large sofa cushion.
    • Pull the thread several times. You want the knots to be tight so that they stay in place for a long time.
  3. Refill the pillows. Feel free to add more polyester fiber filling or batting if you wish. Make sure the filling is evenly and thoroughly distributed inside the pillow.
  4. Close the zipper. If you used a thread cutter to open the pillow, sew it back together. Shake up the pillow and put it back on the couch.

Method 3 of 4: Fix structural problems

  1. Support the sofa cushions. You can buy sofa stiffeners online or at home improvement stores such as Woonexpress. Place these supports under the sofa cushions to give them more support and strength.
  2. Cut a piece of plywood to fit under the sofa cushions. Measure the space under the sofa cushions and cut a piece of plywood to those dimensions. Put it under the pillows. You will feel more support under the cushions, and the sofa should sag less.
  3. Repair the springs. Flip the couch over so you can access the springs under the couch. To fix the springs of your sofa, you will need to wear glasses and use pliers. Carefully bend the springs back with pliers if they are bent out of place (i.e. they look different from the rest of the springs).

Method 4 of 4: Apply other possible solutions

  1. Turn the pillows often. Turn the sofa cushions over frequently to prevent the filling from wearing out repeatedly in one place. Move the cushions around on the couch and turn them over once a week or every time you brush.
  2. Repair the burlap webbing. The jute webbing of the sofa is the bottom layer of the upholstery. The springs press on this layer and can wear it out and let it sag with frequent use. If your sofa is sagging because the bottom layer of upholstery is worn, take it to an upholsterer to have it repaired. Fortunately, this problem is easy to solve for an upholsterer.
  3. Cover the pillows with a blanket or piece of fabric. If you don't have the time or resources for another solution, you can make the sofa cushions look fuller and plump by covering them with a thick blanket or piece of cloth. You can also tuck the blanket into the sides and back of the sofa.

Tips

  • Turn the cushions regularly.
  • Wash the sofa cushions when you take out the filling.

Warnings

  • Be careful when you start working on the couch springs. They can be sharp and dangerous.
  • Make sure you don't overfill the pillows. You could rip the seams or break the zipper.
