With the Apple TV digital media device, you can stream video and stream music over a high-speed internet connection. This device is compatible with other Apple products and smart TVs. To set up Apple TV, you need an HDMI connection and a wireless or wired network connection.

Steps

Part 1 of 4: Connecting Equipment

  1. 1 Get everything you need ready. Apple TV comes with a power cable and remote control. Apple TV only connects to an HDTV and requires an HDMI cable. This cable is not included with Apple TV, but you can buy it from an electronics store or online for a low price. Keep in mind that there is not much difference between a RUB 700 cable and a RUB 6,000 cable. You also need to connect Apple TV to a wireless network or use an Ethernet cable.
    • Apple TVs of the first generation could be connected using component (5-pin) cables, but this is no longer possible with newer models.
    • To connect Apple TV to your home theater, buy an optical digital audio cable (S / PDIF).
  2. 2 Position your Apple TV so that the wires can reach the TV and power outlet. Make sure none of the wires are taut and that there is enough free space around the Apple TV for cooling.
    • If you decide to use a wired internet connection, make sure the Ethernet cable can reach your router.
  3. 3 Connect Apple TV to a receiver or TV via HDMI. These connectors are located on the back or side of the TV, or on the back of the receiver. Typically, your TV has one or more HDMI ports. Some older HDTVs do not have HDMI connectors.
    • Remember the label for the HDMI connector you connect your Apple TV to so that you can set up your TV for the correct signal source.
  4. 4 Connect the power cable to Apple TV and plug it into a power outlet. We recommend that you plug your Apple TV into a surge protector to help protect against power surges.
  5. 5 Connect the Ethernet cable (if necessary). If you're connecting to your network over Ethernet, connect the cable to the back of your Apple TV and then to your router or network switch. If you are connecting to a wireless network, skip this step.
  6. 6 Connect Apple TV to your home theater (optional). Apple TV normally sends audio via an HDMI cable, but if you're using an audio receiver, connect your Apple TV to it using an optical digital audio cable (S / PDIF). Connect the cable to the back of your Apple TV and then to the appropriate port on your receiver or TV.

Part 2 of 4: Set up Apple TV

  1. 1 Tune your TV to the correct source. Press the Input or Source button on your TV remote, and then select the HDMI port your Apple TV is connected to. Typically, Apple TV turns on automatically, so you should see a menu where you can choose your language. If nothing appears, double-check that the connections are correct, and then press the Center button on your Apple TV remote.
  2. 2 Select the interface language. To do this, use the center button on the remote control.
  3. 3 Connect to the network. If you're connected to a network over Ethernet, Apple TV will automatically detect and connect to the network. If you are connecting to a wireless network, a list of available wireless networks will be displayed. Select the desired network and enter the password if the network is secure.
  4. 4 Wait for Apple TV to activate. Apple TV can take a few minutes to complete the initial setup. When the process is complete, you will be prompted to join the Apple TV Usage Data Collection program.
  5. 5 Check for updates. Apple TV will perform better if you update its software to the latest version. You can check for updates in the Settings menu.
    • Launch the Settings app from the Apple TV Home screen.
    • Click General> Update Software. Apple TV checks and installs any available updates.

Part 3 of 4: Connect to iTunes

  1. 1 Launch the Settings app from the Apple TV Home screen.
  2. 2 Select "iTunes Store" from the "Settings" menu. Enter your Apple ID and password. This will give you access to iTunes purchases on Apple TV. You can also connect home computers to Apple TV (using the Home Sharing feature).
  3. 3 Update iTunes to version 10.5 or later on your computer. We recommend using the most recent version of iTunes as version 10.5 is quite old. However, you need at least version 10.5 to share your iTunes library with Apple TV.
    • To update iTunes on your Mac, use the Software Update option from the Apple menu. To update iTunes on a Windows computer, open the Help menu and choose Check for Updates.
  4. 4 Open the File menu in iTunes and choose Home Sharing> Enable Home Sharing. Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click Turn on Home Sharing. Home Sharing will be activated in iTunes and will allow you to share your iTunes library with other computers and devices (including Apple TV).
    • Repeat this process on all computers you want to connect together.
  5. 5 Launch the Settings app on Apple TV. To go backward, press the Menu button on the remote control.
  6. 6 Select "Computers" from the "Settings" menu. Now select the “Turn On Home Sharing Option” and then select the same Apple ID with which you signed in to iTunes. Enter a different Apple ID if you've set up Home Sharing with a different account.

Part 4 of 4: Using Apple TV

  1. 1 Review your iTunes purchases. When you connect your Apple TV to iTunes, you can stream your purchased movies and TV shows. The most recent purchases will be displayed at the top of the home screen. Navigate through the Movies, TV Shows, and Music tabs to view your iTunes Store content and your purchased content.
  2. 2 Use streaming apps. Apple TV comes with a variety of streaming apps that you can use to stream video. Many of these apps, such as Netflix and Hulu +, require a separate paid subscription.
  3. 3 Browse shared iTunes libraries. If Home Sharing is enabled on all of your devices, you can access various media libraries from the Computers option on the Home screen. When you select this option, the screen displays all computers connected to your network for which the Home Sharing feature is enabled in iTunes. Select the computer you want to stream video from, and then browse your library to select the video you want.
