It's a shame to get your clothes dirty, especially if the clothes are made of delicate or light-colored fabrics. To effectively remove dirt, you first need to shake or scrape it off the surface of your garment. Then treat the stain with a laundry detergent or stain remover and wash according to the fabric to remove any grime. Stubborn dirt may seem impossible to remove, but by following the correct steps you will be able to get the dirt out without leaving a trace.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Removing dirt from the surface of the fabric

  1. 1 Spread the garment on a flat surface and let the dirt dry. Do not try to brush off wet dirt - this will only smear it over the fabric. Spread your clothes on the floor or table and let the dirt dry. This can take several hours or even overnight, depending on how thick the dirt was.
  2. 2 As far as possible, brush or brush off dry dirt. Take the garment outside and shake it vigorously several times to remove dirt from the surface. You can shake off dry dirt with your hand or dry cloth. This will make it easier to wipe the dirt off the fabric.
  3. 3 Scrape off dried-on dirt with a knife or soft brush. If the dirt is stuck to your clothes and seems very thick, you can try scraping it off with a knife, soft brush, or putty knife. Scrape dry dirt with a knife or brush until the surface of the fabric appears.
    • Be careful not to scrape the clothes themselves, as this can damage them. Scrape off as much dirt as possible from the surface of the fabric before starting to wash it.
  4. 4 If your clothes cannot be machine washed, have them dry cleaned. If your garment is made from a fabric that is not recommended for washing in a washing machine or by hand, take it to the nearest dry cleaner. This way you will definitely not ruin the item even more by washing it at home.

Part 2 of 3: Pretreating the garment

  1. 1 Apply liquid detergent to the stain and let sit for 15 minutes. Blot the stain with a small amount of liquid detergent by applying it to clean fingers or a damp sponge. If you only have detergent, mix it with a little water to make a paste and apply it to the stain.
    • The detergent helps break down the dirt and makes it easier to remove the stain during washing.
  2. 2 Use a stain remover to remove stubborn stains. Look at your supermarket or online for a stain remover that is specifically designed to remove soil stains. Apply the product to the stain with clean fingers or a damp sponge and let sit for 5-10 minutes.
    • A stain remover is the best option if the dirt is thick and stubborn.
  3. 3 If the clothes are very dirty, soak them in a detergent solution. If your garment is heavily soiled with dirt and it is not possible to apply detergent to individual stains, place the garment in a clean plastic bowl or tub. Then add 2-4 drops of detergent and fill it with warm water. Soak clothing for 30 minutes or overnight, depending on how dirty it is.
    • If the garment is made of white or light colored fabric, do not soak it, as the dark pigment of the dirt will bite even more into the fabric during soaking. Instead, treat the stain with a laundry detergent or stain remover.

Part 3 of 3: Washing clothes

  1. 1 Machine wash clothes in warm or hot water. Set to the highest temperature possible for the type of fabric. Do not put other laundry at the same time as the clothes you want to remove stains from - during washing, the dirt can leave a mark on other items of clothing.
  2. 2 If your clothes are white, use chlorine-based bleach. If the garment is made of white fabric, use chlorine or oxygen bleach to wash it. Do not exceed the recommended amount of bleach indicated on the packaging.
  3. 3 For dark fabrics, wash with powder detergent. If the clothes are colored, use detergent for washing. Bleach can ruin colored clothing and leave marks or stains.
    • After one wash, check if the dirt has been removed. Washing alone may not be enough to permanently remove dirt. Run the soiled garment through as many wash cycles as necessary to completely remove the dirt from the garment.
  4. 4 Wash delicate clothes by hand in hot water. If the fabric is delicate, it should be hand washed in a plastic tub or tub. Pour hot water into a basin and add detergent. Then rub the garment in a soapy water solution to remove any dirt.
    • During hand wash, you can also use a toothbrush or iron brush to remove dirt.
  5. 5 Dry your clothes. Once the dirt has been removed from the garment, it can be dried in an automatic dryer at a low temperature. For delicate garments, air dry them on a string or drying rack.
    • Make sure the stains are completely removed before drying your clothes. Otherwise, it will no longer be possible to withdraw them.
