This article will show you how to find out which of your Facebook Messenger friends are online right now.

Method 1 of 2: On a phone or tablet.

1. 1 Start Facebook Messenger. The app icon looks like a blue text cloud with a white lightning bolt inside. You can find it on the desktop or in the app drawer (Android).
   • If you are not automatically signed in to your account, follow the instructions on the screen to sign in to your account.
2. 2 Click on the contacts icon. This icon looks like a bulleted list and is located at the bottom of the screen, to the right of the large blue circle.
3. 3 Tap the Online tab at the top of the screen. After that, a list of all users who are currently in Messenger will appear on the screen. If your friend is online now, you will see a green circle above their profile picture.

Method 2 of 2: On the computer

1. 1 Enter https://www.messenger.com into the address bar of the browser. This is the official website of the Messenger application.
2. 2 Log in with your Facebook account. If you are already signed in, you will see a list of recent conversations in Messenger. Otherwise, click Continue as (your name) or enter your credentials in the appropriate fields.
3. 3 Click on the blue gear icon in the upper left corner of the page.
4. 4 Click on Active Contacts. After that, a list of Messenger contacts who are currently online will appear on the screen.
   • If you only see your name, slide the switch to the ON position (it will turn green). After that, the contacts will appear, which are now online.
