Gutters and downspouts are designed to divert and drain rainwater where it cannot affect the foundations of the home. Gutters help prevent soil erosion, wall damage and basement leaks. Gutters and downspouts must be properly measured, the correct slope must be adhered to and they must be installed correctly or they will not function properly. Installing gutters is a job that many homeowners can do themselves without too much effort, provided they have the right tools. Read the article below for instructions on installing gutters.

To step

  1. Calculate and buy at least the total gutter length required, as well as the correct number of downspouts and mounting brackets. Gutters should be attached to the eaves and along the length of the roof, ending in a downspout. If the gutter is longer than 12 meters, the slope should run from the center, to two downspouts at each end. A roof molding bracket must be attached to every second crossbar, or every 80 cm.
  2. Determine the line of the gutter and stretch a line between it.
    • Determine the starting point, or highest point of the gutter.
    • Mark the point on the roof molding, 3 cm below the roof plumb.
    • Determine the end point of the gutter, or the location of the downspout.
    • Mark the low end point on the roof molding, and calculate the slope of the gutter, 6 mm per 3 meters in length.
    • Draw a line between the two points.
  3. Cut the gutter to size. Cut the gutter to size with a hacksaw or cut it with large tin snips.
  4. Attach the gutter brackets. Brackets are clamped to the gutter or attached to the eaves first, depending on the type of gutter you purchase. Read the recommendations of the gutter manufacturer you have purchased.
  5. Mark the location of the downspout opening on the gutter. Cut a hole in the gutter in the right place with a jigsaw.
  6. Attach the downspout connector and gutter end caps with silicone caulk and short metal screws. A headboard must be attached to each open end of the gutter.
  7. Attach the gutters. A bracket must be attached to the roof molding every 60 cm. Use stainless steel lag screws long enough to pierce the eaves at least 2 inches.
  8. Attach the downspout to the gutter connector. The tapered end of the downspout should be facing down and in the correct direction.
  9. Seal the gutter joints with sealant and let it dry overnight.

Tips

  • Test the new gutters for leaks and test that the water drains properly using a garden hose at the highest point.
  • Place gutter grates on the gutter to keep leaves and other organic matter from clogging your gutter if you live in a wooded area.
  • Repair rotten moldings or roof damage before installing gutters.
