Steps

  1. 1 Wash your hair. If you've recently dyed your hair and it's too dark, the best thing to do for your hair is to wash it repeatedly with anti-dandruff shampoo. This will dull the color and lighten the hair slightly - this is one option to avoid the use of chemicals. You will be very happy if your hair remains healthy.
  2. 2 Buy a quality color remover. If you've dyed your hair a dark color long enough, you'll have trouble dyeing your hair any other color. You will have to fork out a little and buy a QUALITY 'color remover' that will destroy the false pigment in your hair. There is an excellent Goldwell color washer, but it is often only found in showrooms. Most pharmacies and beauty stores sell similar products, just make sure the ingredients are gentle enough. The top tip is to avoid foods that contain a lot of "hydrogen peroxide" - look for boxes that say low hydrogen peroxide.
  3. 3 Don't bleach your hair. NEVER. Chemicals that are very bad for you will be inhaled and absorbed through the pores and you will damage your hair. They will become dry like cotton wool and brittle. You can burn them.
  4. 4 So, apply a color wash if you have black hair - it will turn brown and then orange. But you will get rid of the black color! You have to sacrifice something!
  5. 5 Choose a new hair color (wisely!) and dye your hair. It is advisable to read when choosing a hair color, how it works, and never be guided by the result indicated on these small images on the box! If your hair is not platinum blonde, you will never achieve the result shown on the box. Always choose something about 2 shades lighter than the final result - look at the picture on the box and imagine a color a few shades darker and you will find a better idea. Most of the dyes you buy in stores do not lighten your hair, unless they are specific 'pre-lighteners' or lightening kits - they simply apply a layer over the existing color. (On a side note, "pre-brighteners" is just a pretty name for a whitening kit - you know how I feel about it!
  6. 6 Since you want to give your hair a new tone, apply some conditioner for lush and very soft color without using shampoo. When I dye my hair, I buy John Frieda healing masks, as well as Andrew Collinge 3 Minute Miracle, Klorane Mango Butter conditioner. Due to my dyeing red, I use John Frieda’s Radiant Red conditioner as it adds a little more color every time you use it and makes the hair look beautiful and shiny. I know it sounds like I'm trying to impose a remedy on you, but I just know it works because I figured it out through my own trial and error.

Warnings

  • Leave your bleach at home!
  • Always wear gloves and protective clothing.
  • Dye your hair in a ventilated area or in a room with an exhaust fan. The fewer chemicals that reach your lungs, the better for you.
