Shallots are from the onion family and taste like a cross between garlic and red onions. "Chopping" shallots means chopping them into small pieces.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Peeling the shallots

Before chopping the shallots, you need to peel them of the paper-thin rind.

  1. 1 Place the shallots on a cutting board. Place the knife on top of the part of the bow that has small roots.
  2. 2 Make a cut deep enough, but do not cut the desired part all the way. It will be much easier for you to peel the skin this way.
  3. 3 Place the shallots with the root side facing up.
  4. 4 Take the spine end and pull it down. This will remove most of the peel, which will help you peel off the rest of it with ease.
  5. 5 Peel the shallots and discard the skins.

Method 2 of 2: Chopping up shallots

Cut the shallots in half to make it easier to chop.

  1. 1 Cut off the other end of the shallots so that both sides are flat.
  2. 2 Flip the shallots flat side down. It will be easier for you to chop the onions if they sit on the cutting board this way.
  3. 3 Position the knife blade parallel to the horizontal width of the shallots.
  4. 4 Cut the shallots in half with the knife blade pointing downward. You will end up with two relatively flat halves.
  5. 5 With your “non-working hand”, take one half of the shallots and place them flat side down on a cutting board.
  6. 6 Make several vertical cuts, starting on the side of the shallots closest to your body. This way you will end up with several long vertical stripes that are 1/8 "(2mm) wide. Place the strips close together on a cutting board.
  7. 7 On vertical strips about 1/8 '' (2 mm) wide, make several cuts at a 90 degree angle. The top end of the knife should cut those vertical strips that are farther from you, while the other end of the knife will cut those strips that are closer. This will allow you to slice each vertical strip in one stroke.
  8. 8 Repeat with the other half of the shallots. This will give you your first chopped onion.
  9. 9 Set the chopped shallots aside until needed. Shallots will cook more evenly if they are all the same size.

Tips

  • Add shallots sautéed in butter to add a pleasant flavor to the sauce. Alternatively, use butter-sautéed shallots as a gravy on your cooked steak.
  • Chop shallots only on a cutting board that is designed for chopping onions and garlic if you don't want the chopped fruit to taste like those foods.
  • Add chopped raw shallots to the Vinaigrette salad.
