In this article, you will learn how to name a mob (animal or creature) using a tag in Minecraft.

Part 1 of 2: How to get a tag

1. 1 Gather the required materials to craft the anvil. You will need it to put the name on the tag. To craft anvils you need:
   • Three iron blocks - to craft one such block, nine iron ingots are required, that is, a total of twenty seven iron ingots will be needed.
   • Four iron ingots - they allow you to bring the total amount of iron to thirty-one blocks.
   • To get iron ingots, smelt iron ore (gray block with orange-brown splashes) in the furnace.
2. 2 Open the workbench. Its size is three by three slots.
   • If you haven't created a crafting table yet, place a wooden plank in each of the four crafting grid slots in your inventory.
3. 3 Craft an anvil. To do this, add iron blocks to the upper slots of the workbench, add three iron ingots to the lower slots, add the remaining iron ingot to the central slot, and then move the anvil to your inventory.
   • In Minecraft PE, click on the black anvil icon on the left side of the screen.
   • In the console version of Minecraft, select the anvil icon in the Structures tab.
4. 4 Remember that the tag cannot be crafted. It can be obtained in one of three ways:
   • Fishing - a clean tag can be accidentally pulled out of the water while fishing.
   • Purchase from villagers - villagers sell blank tags for 20-22 emeralds.
   • Plundering the fortress - tags can be found (with a probability of 22-40%) in chests in fortresses, abandoned mines or mansions.
5. 5 Craft a fishing rod. To do this, you will need three sticks and two threads.
   • Also, from two broken fishing rods, you can make one working.
6. 6 Fish until you find the tag. To cast the hook, grab a fishing rod, face the pond and right-click (or press the left trigger). When there is a splash, press the same button.
   • You will most likely catch a lot of fish and other items before you catch the tag, as tags are rare.
7. 7 Talk to the villager about the tag. Villages are a series of buildings with residents; villages can be scattered all over the world. If you know where the village is and you have a lot of emeralds, it's easier to buy a tag than to catch it in the water.
   • To talk to a villager, face him and then right-click or press the left trigger.
8. 8 Climb into a fortress, mine, or mansion. There you can find a chest with a tag, but the chances of this are extremely small. Therefore, this method of obtaining a tag is very ineffective (especially if you do not know where the fortress / mine / mansion is located).
   • Finding a mansion is very difficult.
   • In fortresses, as a rule, there are many aggressive mobs.

Part 2 of 2: How to write a name on a tag

1. 1 Make sure you are at the first level. The experience level, which is displayed as a green number at the bottom of the screen, must be at least 1 in order for you to be able to write a name on the tag.
2. 2 Place the anvil on the ground. You will hear a loud clanging sound.
3. 3 Place a tag on the anvil. To do this, open your inventory, move the tag to the quick access bar, and then select the tag (that is, take it in your hand).
4. 4 Choose an anvil. An anvil crafting window will open with a tag.
5. 5 Enter the name you want to add to the tag. Do this in the Name field at the top of the Anvil window.
   • On the console, first select the Name field and press A or X ’.
6. 6 Select the name tag. She will go to inventory.
7. 7 Attach a name tag. First, take the tag in your hand.
   • On the console, simply select a tag and press Y or Δ.
8. 8 Find an animal or monster. Be careful if you are going to tag an aggressive mob (like a zombie), but you don't have to be afraid with animals like sheep or cows.
9. 9 Stand facing the mob and press the left mouse button. If the tag is in your hands, a text box with the specified name will appear above the mob's head.
   • This can be repeated with any number of mobs, as one tag can be used multiple times.

Tips

• The name on the tag can be changed if you have never used it before.
• Assigning a name to a mob using a blank tag will not work.

Warnings

• If in Minecraft PE you did not write a name on the tag, but want to attach it to the mob, you simply attack it.
