No matter what language they speak, everyone loves to watch movies. The problem is that most movies don't have the budget to afford multiple language translation, meaning you won't be able to understand the movie depending on your geographic location. Whether you want to add subtitles to your favorite movies or need subtitles for your movie, translating the movie isn't that difficult, but it takes time and patience.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Download new subtitles

1. 

   Note that you can only add movie subtitles on your computer. If your current DVD movie does not have subtitles under "Settings" or "Language" on the DVD menu, you will not be able to add subtitles without using advanced software and equipment. DVDs are protected and cannot be rewritten, and the DVD player will not be able to add new languages. However, the computer is a completely different device, and you can add any new movie subtitle you want to a movie viewed on the computer.
   • If you are watching a movie in the DVD player, try pressing the "title" or "subtitle" button on the DVD player control.

   Find the movie you want to add subtitles to on your computer and place it in a separate file. Find the movie file or folder in Finder or Windows Explorer. Usually, it will be a .mov, .avi, or.mp4 file. Fortunately, you don't need to edit the movie file, however, you will need to find it and link it to a new subtitle file. Subtitle files will usually have a .RT extension, and simply include the words and times each subtitle needs to appear in the movie.
   • You need to keep the movie file together with the subtitle file.SRT, so that it can read the subtitles.
   • Some older subtitle files may have a .UB extension.

   Search the internet "Movie Name + Language + Subtitle" to find the correct file. Use your favorite search engine to find subtitles in your language. For example, if you need Indonesian subtitles for X-Men: First Generation, you can search for "X-Men: First Class Indonesian Subtitles". The first web page you find will usually be suitable for use, these files are small in size and usually contain no viruses.

   Find the movie subtitles you want and download the file .SRT. Download the .RT file from a website, such as Subscene, MovieSubtitles, or YiFiSubtitles. Make sure you avoid advertisements and download only .SRT or.SUB files. If you feel insecure about the site, leave and look for another site.

   Rename the subtitle file to match the movie file. If the movie title is BestMovieEver.AVI, your subtitle must be BestMovieEver.SRT. Find the downloaded file anywhere (usually in the "Downloads" folder) and make sure you rename it appropriately. The filename .RT must be the same as the movie title.

   • VLC player is the easiest and free video player that handles almost all file formats.

Method 2 of 2: Create your own subtitles (three ways)

1. 

   Understand the purpose of subtitles. Subtitles are translations, and anyone who has used Google Translate knows that translation is both an art and a science. If you're subtitling a scene, you need to consider each line carefully:
   • What is the purpose of dialogue? No matter what words they use, what emotion is the character trying to convey? This is the guiding principle when you translate.
   • How do you get the subtitles adjusted for the right time when the character speaks? Some people will choose to show several lines of dialogue at once, starting early and ending a little late to give viewers time to read through.
   • How do you deal with slang and rhetoric? They are often not translated correctly, so you will need to replace slang or rhetoric into your native language. However, this needs you to look up the meanings of foreign idioms and slang.

   Use the caption creation website to effectively add subtitles to any movie file. Websites like DotSub, Amara, and Universal Subtitler allow you to watch the movie while writing the subtitles, then output to an .RT file that matches the movie. Even though subtitle sites behave differently, they all follow the same format:
   • Choose when the title appears.
   • Write down the title.
   • Choose when the title disappears.
   • Repeat throughout the movie, checking "Complete" when you're done.
   • Download the .RT file and place it in the same folder as the movie.

3. 

   Create your own headlines using Notepad. Although the process is done quickly by the program, you can write down the title yourself if you want. To do so, open text editing software, such as Window's Notepad or Apple's TextEdit (both free and pre-installed), and make sure you know the right format of the subtitles. Before starting, select "Save As" and name it "Movie Name .RT". Then, set the encoding to "ANSI" for English subtitles and "UTF-8" for non-English subtitles. Next, write down your subtitles. Each section will be written on its own line, so press "enter" after each line:
   • Subtitle number. 1 will be the first, 2 will be the second, and so on.
   • Duration of subtitles. Duration is written in format hours: minutes: seconds: milliseconds -> hours: minutes: seconds: milliseconds (hour: minutes: seconds: milliseconds)
     • For example: 00:01:20:003 -> 00:01:27:592
   • Subtitle content: This is the content of the subtitles.
   • An empty line. Leave a blank line before the next number of subtitles.

4. 

   Create subtitles in movie editing software to avoid handling file .RT. This method allows you to see the subtitles when adding and adjusting the position, color, and style manually. Open the movie file with movie editing software, such as Premier, iMovie, or Windows Movie Maker, and drag the movie into the timeline (work part). From here, click on the menu "Titles" in the software and choose your preferred style. Write down the title, drag it to the top of the appropriate movie spot, and repeat.
   • You can right-click on the title, copy and paste it so that all titles have the same format, saving you time.
   • The only downside to this format is that the movie will need to be saved as a separate file. You won't be able to turn off subtitles, as they're part of the movie now.

Advice

• When searching for .RT files, you must select a file with the same name as the movie. If it is not available, simply change the name after downloading.

Warning

• Do not download the .RT file if the filename is not the same as the movie title, or at least quite similar.
