If you want your skin to be clear and healthy - and your makeup to stay as flawless as possible - you should wash your makeup brushes regularly to remove old makeup residue, bacteria and other germs. But that doesn't mean that you have to buy an expensive brush cleaner in the store for that. You can make your own cleanser at home using ingredients you probably already have at home. Make a basic version with just two ingredients, use natural ingredients for a gentle cleanser, or conjure up a spray that you can actually use to clean your brushes every day.

Ingredients

Basic brush cleaner

  • 2 parts antibacterial dish soap
  • 1 part olive oil

Natural brush cleaner

  • 120 ml of witch hazel
  • 10 ml of liquid castil soap
  • 240 ml of distilled water
  • 5 ml nourishing oil, such as olive oil, jojoba oil or almond oil

Daily brush cleaning spray

  • 60 ml of distilled water
  • 150 ml isopropyl alcohol
  • 10 to 15 drops of essential oil

To step

Method 1 of 3: Prepare a basic brush cleaner

  1. Mix the dish soap and olive oil together. On a small plate, combine 2 parts antibacterial dish soap with 1 part olive oil. Stir them together with a spoon until completely mixed together.
    • The antibacterial detergent kills any germs or bacteria on the brushes, while the olive oil breaks down stubborn makeup, leaving the brushes completely clean.
    • Do not use a paper plate to mix the cleaning agent. The oil will seep through the paper.
  2. Wet your brushes. Take the brushes you want to clean and run them under a running tap with lukewarm water. Rub your fingers over the hairs to make sure they are all completely wet.
    • Make sure to keep the brushes hair down when you wet them. If water gets into the sleeve - the part of the brushes just below the bristles - it can loosen the glue so the bristles can fall out.
    EXPERT TIP

Dip the brushes in the cleanser and work it through the bristles. Cover all brushes with the soap mixture. Then move the brushes back and forth across the palm of your hand to let the cleaner work. Continue to move the brushes over your hand until the foam is no longer colored with makeup.

    • For very dirty makeup brushes, you may need to wipe off the soapy water and dip the brushes in the cleaner a second time.
  3. Rinse the brushes and let them air dry. Once the soapy residue is no longer colored, run the brushes under lukewarm water until all the foam has disappeared from the hair. Gently shape the wet hairs with your fingers and lay them flat to let them air dry.
    • If possible, lay the brushes flat on the edge of a table or counter, so that the bristles hang over the edge. This prevents moisture from seeping into the sleeve.

Method 2 of 3: Make natural brush cleaner

  1. Put all ingredients together in a bowl or container. Add 1 cup of witch hazel, 1 cup of liquid castil soap, 1 cup of distilled water and 5 ml of nourishing oil - for example: olive oil, jojoba oil or almond oil - in a mason jar or other type of container. Put the lid on the container and shake it well to mix all the ingredients together.
    • The witch hazel in the cleaner is antibacterial and thus kills all germs on the brushes. The castil soap removes make-up residues and other dirt. The oil also helps break down makeup and acts as a conditioner for the brushes.
    • To prevent the oil from separating from the other ingredients, always shake the cleaner before use.
  2. Dip the brushes in the cleaner and let them soak. When you are done cleaning the brushes, pour some of the cleaner into a small bowl or cup. Put the brushes in the cleaner and let them soak for 5 to 10 minutes.
    • If you prefer, you can put the cleaner in a spray bottle, spray a little on the brushes, and then rub the bristles on a towel.
  3. Rinse the brushes and let them dry. After the brushes have soaked for a few minutes, remove them from the cleaner. Put them in the sink under lukewarm water to rinse and gently shape the wet hairs with your fingers. Place the brushes on the counter or table to air dry.
    • Make sure you don't dry the brushes with the bristles up. Water can drip back into the sleeve of the brushes, causing the hairs to fall out.

Method 3 of 3: Mix daily brush cleaner

  1. Pour the alcohol into a spray bottle. Add 150 ml of isopropyl alcohol to a clean plastic or glass spray bottle. Leave enough space at the top of the bottle to mix the water and oil.
    • For best results, use 70% isopropyl alcohol in the cleaning spray. The alcohol does not only serve as a disinfectant for the brushes; it also helps the cleaner to dry faster, so you can immediately clean and use the brushes.
    • The spray bottle must hold at least 240 ml.
  2. Add the water and oil. With the alcohol already in the spray bottle, add 60 ml of distilled water and 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Shake the bottle well so that all ingredients are completely mixed.
    • The essential oil is intended to cover the alcohol scent of the cleanser. You can use your favorite scent for this. You can also use an oil with antibacterial properties, such as eucalyptus, peppermint, lavender, or tea tree oil.
    • To prevent the oil from separating from the other ingredients, always shake the cleaner before use.
  3. Spray the brushes with the cleaning solution and wipe them on a towel. Before using the cleaner, lightly spray the bristles of the brushes. Run the brushes back and forth on a towel or paper towel. Let the brush air dry for a minute or two, then use the brush as you normally would.
    • Feel the bristles of the brushes before using them after cleaning to make sure the cleaner has dried completely.

Tips

  • It is important to wash your makeup brushes regularly to remove bacteria and germs that can cause acne, skin irritations and infections. Clean your brushes at least once a week to keep them clean.
  • The daily cleansing spray is ideal for a quick clean when you are in a hurry. It's also an effective way to remove a color from your brush if you want to use a completely different color afterward.
