Gengar is a mighty Ghost-type Pokémon and an evolution of Haunter, which can be tricky to come by. You have to catch a Haunter or by means of get trades, (or go for a Gastly, if you don't mind leveling up first) and then trade this Haunter with someone else to evolve the Pokémon. Haunter is not available in all games, so you may not be able to get it without relying on a friend or trading partner.

To step

1. Catch a Haunter or Gastly, or get one through barter. Depending on which version of Pokémon you are playing, you may or may not be able to find a Haunter or Gastly in the wild. If you manage to find a Gastly you have to increase his level to 25 to make him evolve into a Haunter.

2. Trade your Haunter with a friend. Haunter evolves into Gengar when he is traded, so you need someone to trade with, trusting that they will return it. The way you trade depends on the version of Pokémon you are playing.
   • In Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, you can trade Pokémon by, after reaching the Pokémon Center in Hau’oli City, Festival Plaza from the menu. Then select Link Trade to trade with a friend or guest. Both you and your exchange partner must Quick Link Select in the menu and press the touchscreen. Then select Trade. You can do this anywhere in the Alola Region.
   • In Black, White, Black 2, White 2, X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, and Omega Ruby, you can trade Pokémon at the Global Trading Station.
   • In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, you can trade Pokémon using a pal pad in the basement of any Pokémon Center.
   • If you are using John GBA Lite you cannot trade with other users, but you can trade with yourself by using a second game file.
3. Get your Gengar back in an exchange. Once the Haunter is traded, it will evolve into a Gengar. Have your friend return it to you in an exchange so that you can use it.
