Magnetic attraction is one of the most exciting phenomena. Magnetic attraction causes objects to behave in unusual ways, which often surprises children. Although this kind of magnetic attraction is not particularly applicable in industry, it can be used to conduct a very interesting experiment.

Steps

1. 1 Discharge any static electricity that has accumulated in your body by using a grounding conductor. Just touch a metal object that touches the ground, such as a metal table leg.
2. 2 Hold a metal object (preferably long and thin) in your non-working hand, and also take a magnet in your working hand. If possible, place a metal object on your open palm without pinching it with your fingers. Your fingers can interfere with the experiment.
3. 3 Place the positive pole of the magnet on the near end of the metal object. Hold the negative pole of the magnet without placing your hand in the area between the magnet and a metal object.
4. 4 Rub the magnet along a metal object. Make slow movements from the bottom up. Move the magnet continuously in a straight line for the best result.
5. 5 Rub the magnet along the object in 10 up and down strokes. This will tune the negative and positive particles inside the object to magnetize it.
6. 6 Test the magnetism of a metal object by attaching a paper clip to it. If the paper clip is held onto the object by magnetic force, then you've done everything right.
7. 7 Rub the magnet again until the object is completely magnetized. Repeat until you create a magnet. If all else fails, try the same with another metal object or magnet.

Tips

• Once you have mastered the basics of creating a permanent magnet, you can start creating an electromagnet. To do this, you will need a copper wire, a nail, and a battery. Although this project involves working with electricity, it is completely safe for children and adults.
• You can demagnetize an object by throwing the object with all your might on a hard surface. Then you can magnetize the object again.
