In the last few years, vaping has become increasingly popular as an alternative to cigarette smoking. Almost all vape pens and e-cigarettes are powered by batteries (the batteries heat the liquid and convert it into a vapor), which means they need to be charged enough to work properly. Depending on the specific make and model you have, you can get your vape pen fully charged and ready to use using either the included charging unit and USB cable or an external battery charger.

Method 1 of 2: Charging an integrated battery

1. Check if your vape pen has an integrated or exchangeable battery. You can usually find this information in the owner's manual or the instruction booklet that came with your vape pen. Integrated batteries are usually in the form of a long tube or cylinder (which is attached to the cartridge, or the part that heats the e-liquid), while removable batteries are housed in the body of the pen itself.
   • Most vape pens use 510 thread batteries, which have a universal design that makes them compatible with a variety of cartridges.
   • Your vape pen battery may have colors, text, or other markings to distinguish it from the cartridge.
2. Connect your vape pen to its charger with the included USB cable. First, plug the AC adapter into a power outlet. Then plug the large end of the USB cable into the adapter and connect the small end to the corresponding output on your pen. Depending on the model you are using, you may have to unscrew the battery from the cartridge to get to the charging port.
   • Always use the charger and cable that came with your vape pen. Several units sometimes run at higher voltages and too much juice can overheat or even explode your pen.
   • Never attempt to charge your vape pen with a laptop, cell phone or other device that could potentially be damaged in the event of a short circuit or overvoltage.
3. Wait until the battery is fully charged. Charging times for different batteries can vary from 1 to 4 hours. You know your battery is fully charged when the indicator light turns green or starts blinking regularly. On some models, the charge light turns off when the battery reaches 100%.
   • Keep your vape pen away from flammable objects (such as blankets or upholstered furniture) while it is charging to reduce the risk of fire from overheating.
   • Once your battery is fully charged, remove it from the charging unit and screw it back onto the cartridge to start vaping again.

   Tip: Make sure to disconnect your battery from the charger as soon as it is full.Overcharging strains the batteries and eventually reduces their capacity.

   
   
4. Look at the red light telling you it is time to charge your battery. When the battery of your vape pen has dropped to a certain level, a red light will appear on the LED screen. Remember: red means "stop". Do not use your vape pen until it is recharged.
   • Trying to use your vape pen with a low battery can lead to a short circuit, a dead battery, or other defects.
   • If your battery is no longer charging or is draining faster than usual, see that as a sign that you need to replace it.

Method 2 of 2: Charge removable batteries

1. Open the housing of your vape pen to access the batteries. If your vape pen runs on removable batteries, you will need to take them out before you can recharge them. Find the battery cover on the bottom or side of your pen. Once you find that, press the thumb latch or tab to pull it open.
   • Some vape pens need to be modified to work with removable batteries. This usually involves fitting the cassette into a separate device that contains the batteries.
   • The most common type of removable battery that vape pens run on are 18650's. These are similar to standard AA batteries, only larger.

   Tip: Not all 18650 batteries are designed for use in vape devices. In order not to damage your pen or charger, or the battery itself, only buy batteries that are the right size and shape.

   
   
2. Place the batteries in a good quality external charger. Plug the charger cable into the wall outlet. As soon as the LCD screen or power indicator light appears, insert the batteries into the charging points according to the indicated pole positions. You should hear a soft click when they are properly attached.
   • If you're struggling to fit your batteries into the charger, try flipping one or both. Maybe they are just the wrong way round.
   • Make sure to use a charger that is compatible with your specific battery type - combining types can easily destroy a battery. For more information on what type of charger to use, see the manual that came with your vape pen.
3. Charge the batteries for at least 3 hours. This is the average time it takes most removable vape batteries to fully charge. However, be aware that charging times can vary quite a lot depending on the brand, age and capacity of your batteries. The best thing to do is just pay attention while they are in the charger.
   • Choose a place for your charger that is neither too hot nor too cold. The optimal temperature range for charging most types of low voltage batteries is 10-30 ° C.
   • If your vape pen has a "soft start" mode and you are not in a hurry, consider using it. Soft start charges batteries slower than fast on a high heat, which can cause them to burn out faster.
4. Remove the batteries from the charger when they reach full capacity. Many newer chargers have LCD screens that display all the relevant charging details you may need, including charge time, current percentage and battery specifications. Other chargers may have a light that turns green or turns off when the batteries are charged.
   • Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the different functions of your charger before using it for the first time.
   • Check your batteries often to avoid overcharging.
5. Put the batteries back into your vape pen. Open the battery cover and slide the batteries back into place. Just like when you installed your charger, make sure they are facing the right way. If you accidentally put them over the wrong way, your vape pen may not work when you put it back on.
   • A blinking indicator light on a freshly charged vape pen usually indicates a connection problem. Try to remove and reinsert the batteries, making sure they are oriented correctly and securely.
6. Regularly check the charge level of your batteries. If you're not sure if your batteries need to be charged, just take them out, put them in your external charger and check their current percentage. You can then either recharge them or leave them in place to recharge them.
   • If your charger does not have an LCD display, a light may illuminate to indicate that the batteries are charging. If possible, let them charge until they have full power.
7. Replace your batteries if they no longer function properly. Most 18650 batteries are made to last 300-500 cycles, or about 1-2 years of regular charging for most people. If your batteries are taking longer than usual to charge (anything over 4 hours is a bad sign), it's best to get rid of them and buy new ones.
   • Many vape stores stock 18650 batteries. If you can't find them there, try ordering them online from a vape supply retailer to make sure you get the kind you need.
   • Buy one or more extra batteries to keep with you. That way you'll have a spare on hand when you're charging one of the others, or if your vape pen starts to fail while you're on the go.
   • Instead of throwing your used batteries away where they can leak corrosive acid, take them to a battery recycling bin to dispose of them safely and reduce the amount of harmful waste in nature.

Tips

• If you are going to buy a new battery for your vape pen, check the packaging for the mAh value (milliamp hours) of the product. Batteries with a higher mAh last longer between charges.
• Invest in a battery case to protect removable batteries when not in use.
