Xbox One is Microsoft's newest console. You can play games with it, use the internet, listen to music and watch TV - all at the same time! Initial installation of the console is very easy.

Part 1 of 3: Making the connections

1. Find the connections. Xbox One has multiple connections to the device that must be made first. These include the new Kinect sensor, the internet connection and your set-top box if you want to watch TV via your Xbox One.
2. Connect to the internet. Before doing anything, make sure your console is connected to the internet. You can establish a connection with an ethernet cable if you connect it to your modem, or you can connect wirelessly if a Wi-Fi router is available.
3. Connect to your TV. Use an HDMI cable to connect your Xbox One to your TV. Connect the HDMI cable to the HDMI OUT port on the back of the Xbox One. The other end of the HDMI cable goes into the HDMI input of your TV. If you have cable or satellite, you can connect another HDMI cable to the HDMI IN port on your console and the other end to the cable or satellite TV set-top box.
4. Connect the Kinect sensor. Plug your Kinect into the Kinect port on the back of the Xbox One. This is the port between the USB ports and the IR port.
   • The Kinect sensor cable has a fixed length of 3 meters, so make sure your Kinect sensor is close enough to your Xbox One.
5. Connect the Xbox One to an electrical outlet. Plug the power cable on the back of the Xbox One into the power outlet. This plug is located at the far left of the rear of the console. Connect the power cord to an electrical outlet. Plug the other end of the cable directly into the console.
   • The LED on the Xbox One's power supply should flash as an indication that power is available.

Part 2 of 3: The basic settings

1. Turn on your Xbox One. You can turn on the console with your wired controller. Simply press and hold the Home button on your Xbox One controller to turn on your controller and your console at the same time.
   • You can also touch the Xbox One's front panel (where the logo is located) to turn on the console.
   • If you're using a wireless controller, make sure you put batteries in it first.
   • The Kinect sensor can also be used to turn on your console, except during the initial setup. You can normally turn on your Xbox One with the Kinect sensor by saying "Xbox On" within range of your Kinect sensor.
2. Follow the instructions on the screen. The first thing you will see on the screen is the Xbox One logo on a green background. Wait a moment and you will eventually get the instructions for the initial installation.
   • The first instruction is to press A to continue. You get this instruction while an Xbox One controller is displayed on the screen. The Xbox One greets you for the first time.
3. Choose your language. There are all kinds of languages ​​to choose from, including English, German, Spanish and many more. You can scroll down to view all options. Select your language then press A.
   • You will notice that the texts on the Xbox One screen are automatically translated to the language currently selected in preview.
4. Choose your location. Depending on your selected language, Xbox One will now give you the option to choose the country where you live.
5. Select your network preferences. You can choose a wired connection or a WiFi (wireless) connection. For stability it is better to choose a wired connection.
   • If you choose wireless, you may need to enter your router's password before you can access it.
   • If for some reason Xbox One can't find your router, press Y on your controller to refresh the scan.
6. Update your console. Since this is the initial setup, you will need to update the Xbox One. This is almost certain with any initial installation, regardless of the console. You must be connected to the internet to download the approximately 500 MB update.
   • After the update, your console will automatically reset.

Part 3 of 3: Perfecting your settings

1. Choose your time zone. After the Xbox One has been reset, you will be prompted to press the Start button on your controller to continue the installation. First you have to select your time zone. Again, the default selection depends on the country you previously selected.
2. Install the Kinect sensor. Installing the Kinect sensor makes it possible to automatically sign in via Kinect recognition, to control the Xbox One with your voice and hand gestures, to chat with other Kinect users and to control your TV.
   • Make sure speakers are connected to your Xbox One so that the Kinect setup can correctly determine speaker volume.
   • Keep quiet when the instructions ask for it. This will affect the installation of your Kinect sensor.
3. Sign in with your Microsoft account. You can use the email address and password associated with your current gamer tag. If you don't already have an existing gamer tag, you can use Skype, Outlook.com, Windows 8, or Windows phone credentials instead.
   • If you do not have an account with any of these alternatives, you will need to create a new Microsoft account before continuing.
4. Accept the Xbox Live Terms of Use. Review and accept the Xbox Live Terms of Use. After acceptance, the privacy statement will be displayed.
5. Adjust the look. You will have the chance to choose a color for the color scheme of your Xbox One. When choosing, you will see a preview of what your dashboard will look like.
6. Save your password. Before you finish the installation, Xbox One will ask if you want to save your password. It is recommended that you save this to prevent your console from asking for your password every time you log in, but do not save the password if you are unsure who else is using the console.
   • You will also be asked if the Kinect sensor can automatically log you in upon recognition.
7. Complete the installation procedure. Now press the Start button on your controller to complete the installation procedure and go to the dashboard of your Xbox One with your chosen color. Enjoy your new Xbox One!
