The Rum Runner, a cocktail, was created at the Holiday Isle Tiki Bar in Islamorada, Florida, in the late 1950s. To step

Method 1 of 2: Making a Frozen Rum Runner

  1. Combine all liquid ingredients with ice in a blender. Place about two cups of ice in a blender, food processor, or similar appliance. Then pour the liquid ingredients over the ice. There are countless variations to the basic Rum Runner ingredient list - we'll just mention a few in this article (see the recipes above).
    • The Original Rum Runner is exactly what it sounds like - all the goodness of an old-fashioned Rum Runner. A delicious tropical base drink.
    • The Fancy Rum Runner is all the rage in high profile circles. With refined ingredients such as black currant brandy and spiced rum, this drink is head and shoulders above the rest.
    • The Base Rum Runner is for the party-goer who wants a no-frills drink. With ordinary, affordable ingredients, this variation is a pick-me-up for the smaller purse.
    • The Islamorada Rum Runner, named after the place where it was first mixed, is a drink for the sweet tooth. Although the main ingredient is sweet-and-sour mix, this drink slips easily down your throat.
    • The Holiday Isle Rum Runner is extra tasty and extra-strong. Due to the 151-proof rum in this variation, it offers a tropical taste with a kick.
  2. Blend until smooth. Turn on the blender until the liquid ingredients and ice look smooth and "slushy". Try to avoid large chunks of ice.
  3. Serve. Traditionally, Rum Runners are served in a Hurricane cocktail glass, but if you don't have any you can use any glass. Garnish with a slice of orange or lemon.
  4. Optionally you can add a Bacardi 151 floater. It is a popular Rum Runner tradition to pour a thin layer of Bacardi 151 on top of the cocktail. This liqueur with a high alcohol percentage floats on the mixed ingredients and gives the drink a first fiery "kick". To create a Bacardi "floater", carefully pour 30ml Bacardi 151 on top of the cocktail last.
    • Do not try to pour all the liqueur on top at once - it will "break" through the top of the cocktail and give the whole drink a strong flavor.

Method 2 of 2: Making a Rum Runner on the Rocks

  1. Fill a glass with ice. Place a handful of ice cubes in a Hurricane cocktail glass - the more ice, the colder the drink. If you don't have a Hurricane cocktail glass, you can use any other glass. Especially old-fashioned glasses look nice.
  2. Add the liquid ingredients. Pour the liquid ingredients over the ice one at a time. Mix the ingredients gently. You can also put the ice and liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker, shake them, and pour them into a glass. Again, there are countless variations on the ingredients of a Rum Runner - the recipes at the top of this article give just a few of the possibilities. To mention it again, the recipes in this article are:
    • Original
    • Fancy
    • Base
    • Islamorada
    • Holiday Isle
  3. Serve. Garnish with a slice of orange or lemon and serve with a straw.
  4. Optionally you can add a Bacardi 151 floater. As with the frozen version of the Rum Runner, it is not uncommon to add a Bacardi floater to the Rum Runner on the rocks. Do this in the same way - pour 30 ml Bacardi 151 on top of the ready cocktail.
    • Note, because the "on the rocks" version of the Rum Runner is more liquid than slushy, the Bacardi 151 mixes more with the cocktail itself. If you don't want this, pour the Bacardi into the straw - this will ensure the first thing you taste is the Bacardi on its own and will keep the Bacardi from mixing with the rest of the drink.

Tips

  • Drink responsible.
