Although gas grills are fairly simple in design, if this is your first time using a grill, you may have questions about how to turn it on. Many modern grills use a button to ignite. Older and simpler models need to be manually ignited. If the auto starter or manual ignition methods do not work, troubleshoot by checking all hoses and valves.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Automatic ignition

  1. 1 Open the grill lid. If the grill lid is closed during ignition, gas will accumulate in it. This in turn can lead to an explosion. If you turn on the gas supply and the lid remains closed, turn off the gas and open the lid. Wait a few minutes for the gas to dissipate, then start over.
  2. 2 Connect a gas cylinder to the grill. As a rule, gas is supplied to the grill from a gas cylinder. It is usually placed under the grill, behind or on the side. Connect the gas hose securely to the cylinder and inlet on the grill.
    • The connection method will depend on the grill model. When in doubt, follow the instructions in the user manual. If you don't have one, find the digital version of the manual by entering the keywords you want into a search engine.
    • Some grills can connect directly to your home's natural gas system. This is a stationary gas supply system, reminiscent of a connection to a cylinder.
    • Small tabletop grills usually have small gas cylinders that are screwed onto the grill valve before it can be ignited.
  3. 3 Open the gas supply. Typically, this involves turning the round valve on the cylinder. Some grills may have an additional tap, which also needs to be opened for the gas to flow. Open the tap fully and then wait about a minute for the gas to flow through the hose.
  4. 4 Light the grill. To do this, unscrew the adjustment knob on the front of the grill to the maximum. Turn the knob closest to the burner you want to light to turn on the gas.Press the ignition button so that a spark appears in the grill and ignites the gas. For maximum efficiency, follow the directions for lighting your grill.
    • Different grill models can be designed in different ways. For example, in one, the ignition button and the knob for adjusting the fire power can be combined. Follow the instructions in the instruction manual if you have any questions about the ignition procedure.
    • After one burner is lit, you can ignite others without pressing the ignition button. Just turn the knobs that are in charge of these burners.

Method 2 of 3: Manually lighting the gas grill

  1. 1 Open the grill lid and apply gas to it. When the lid is closed, gas can build up in the grill, increasing the likelihood of an explosion. Supply gas by connecting a gas hose to the outlet nozzle on the cylinder and the inlet nozzle at the back or side of the grill.
    • Before or after the inlet and outlet nozzles, there is usually a valve that looks like a faucet.
  2. 2 Open the gas supply valve. There must be a valve at the gas inlet to the grill. Open it fully to turn on the gas supply. After that, wait a few minutes for the gas to fill the gas pipeline.
  3. 3 Turn the control knob and light the gas. Insert a match into the ignition hole. This should be a small hole located on the side of the grill. Turn the burner knob closest to this hole. Take the second match and use it to light the first one, which is already in the hole. The burner should light up.
    • After the first burner lights up, you just need to turn the knobs of the other burners. They will all catch fire from the fire of the first burner.
    • Some models of the grill may not have a ignition hole or it will be unsuccessful. In this case, get as far away from the grill as possible and light it with a long match.

Method 3 of 3: Troubleshooting

  1. 1 Check gas supply and hoses. If the cylinder is empty or you cut off the gas supply, then even the grill, which is in perfect condition, will not work. Replace empty gas cylinders. After connecting new cylinders to your grill, turn all valves to the "On" position. Check hoses for cracks, gaps and other signs of wear. Replace old or damaged gas hoses.
    • If the rubber on the hose appears to be brittle, then it is time to replace the hose. Replacements can be found at most hardware and hardware stores.
    • After you have correctly applied the gas to the grill and opened the valves, hiss, especially near the nozzles and valves, may indicate a gas leak. Leaking gas can cause fire and explosion. Turn off the gas immediately and stop using the grill if you notice a leak.
  2. 2 Light the grill by hand if the automatic ignition is faulty. The spark plug comes on every time you press the button. Frequent use can sometimes lead to breakage or malfunction. If you are sure that there is enough gas in the cylinder and the hoses are in good condition, manual ignition will be an excellent solution in case of a malfunction.
    • A malfunctioning spark plug can sometimes be identified by the sound it makes. If you press the ignition button and the candle makes an unusual sound, it may indicate that it is not working.
  3. 3 Replace burners. If everything is fine with the gas supply and the electric ignition works, the problem may be in the burners that are located under the grill grate. Replace burners according to instructions.
    • Try restarting the regulator before replacing burners. This procedure is not available on all grills, but if yours is one or more, you will find reset instructions in the instruction manual.
    • As a rule, replacing old burners with new ones will not be too expensive, and you can buy new burners at a hardware store, a hardware store, or directly from the manufacturer.
  4. 4 Check electrical components. Many modern grills have batteries and wires to power the various parts of the grill. They can come loose or wear out over time. Reconnect any loose wires, replace dead batteries and try lighting the gil again.
    • The spark plug is sometimes connected to a small battery to power the ignition mechanism. Where it is located will depend on the model of your grill, but will usually be placed next to or below the ignition button.
  5. 5 Wait for gas from cold cylinders to reach the grill. Cold can reduce the pressure in the cylinder. Because of this, the gas can flow more slowly or even freeze. If it is very cold or frosty outside, give the gas more time to pass from the cylinder to the grill.
    • If the balloon is frozen, you will not be able to use it until it thaws. Bring the balloon to a warm place, such as a shed or basement, to thaw.

Warnings

  • Even if the grill is used correctly, there is a risk of fire. Keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case you need to extinguish a sudden fire.
