Chkdsk checks your hard drive and generates a file system activity report. We will show you how to use the chkdsk utility on Windows, as well as on Mac OS X.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: On Windows (any version)

1. 1 Open the Start Menu. Select My Computer or Computer. A list of your drives will open. Find the drive you want to check.
2. 2 Click on the disk with the right mouse button. Select Properties. Go to the Tools tab. These are the basic tools for working with a disk. Here you can run the chkdsk utility, click Check Now ...
3. 3 Select the settings you want. You can put the option to fix errors and recover bad sectors. Check the box next to the required fields. After checking the disk, you will need to restart your computer.
   • You must be logged into an account with administrator rights.

Method 2 of 3: Via the command line

1. 1 Reboot your computer. Continue pressing the F8 button until the system boot options window appears. You can open Command Prompt here without logging into Windows.
2. 2 Select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option.”The computer will boot the system in safe mode. A command prompt will open.
3. 3 Run chkdsk. Type “chkdsk” and press Enter to check the current disk without fixing any errors.
   • To check the drive and fix any errors, type “chkdsk c: / f” and replace “c” with any other drive letter.
   • To run chkdsk and fix errors, fix bad sectors and recover data, type “chkdsk c: / r” Replace “c” with any other drive letter, if necessary.
   • You may need to restart your computer. Press Y if the restart message appears.

Method 3 of 3: On Mac OS X

1. 1 Launch Disk Utility. This program has the same function as chdsk on Windows. You will need a Mac OS X installation disc.
2. 2 Turn on your Mac and insert the disc. Hold down the "C" key. The Mac OS installer will load. Choose language.
3. 3 Open Disk Utility. Select the drive you want. Click Fix.
   • If the error checking and fixing was successful, check the rest of the disks, if necessary.
