Personal relationships and business relationships are becoming increasingly international, partly because communication technology is developing at a rapid pace. More and more people therefore have to call abroad, for example to Germany. Calling Germany is easier than it seems, in this article you can read a number of methods.

Method 1 of 3: Make a call with a phone

1. First enter the country code. That is the code with which you indicate which country you want to call. The country code for Germany is "0049" (or "+49).
2. Enter the phone number including the area code (area code). Enter the phone number of the person you are trying to reach. Make sure the number you have contains the country code and region code. In that case, omit the country code, because you had already entered it.
   • Make sure you enter the correct numbers in the correct order.
3. Wait until you hear a ringtone. It may take a little longer than with telephone conversations in the Netherlands before you hear anything.

Method 2 of 3: Finding the number

1. Find the number of the person you want to call. If you do not yet know the number of the person you are trying to reach, you must look up the number first. You can search the Internet or consult friends or family of the person you want to call.
2. Make sure to find the region code as well. The area code, or area code, contains 2 to 5 digits. A phone number without the area code has 3 to 9 digits, but usually it will be 9. So if you found a number with only 9 digits, it is probably without the area code.
   • For example, you can look up the area code of the region you want to call and see if it matches the first digits of the phone number you found.
3. Confirm the desired phone number. The rates for calling abroad are relatively high, so calling the wrong number can be a costly mistake. Always check if you can get the same phone number from two different sources before making a call.

Method 3 of 3: Make a call with Skype

1. Install Skype. You can download this program for free from the official website. You can also install it as an app on your smartphone.
2. Buy Skype Credit. Buy credit from Skype to make calls. If you want to call a phone number with Skype, it always costs money, but it is usually much cheaper than calling abroad with your mobile or landline phone.
3. Buy a headset if necessary. If you are using Skype with your computer, it is highly recommended that you purchase a headset. Even if your computer does have a microphone and speakers (for example a laptop), it is more pleasant to call with a headset. With a smartphone you just call as usual.
4. Search for the phone number as described above. You also have to enter the number with Skype.
5. Open the keyboard screen on Skype and key in the number. Now click on the green button with a phone icon. Now the number will be dialed and the ringtone will sound. Hopefully it will be recorded! When you have finished calling, press the red hang up button.

Tips

• If you call Germany from a landline, it is advisable to first investigate what the costs are with your provider. If you often have to call Germany, it is best to first research which provider offers the best rates.
• When calling Germany with your mobile phone, it is useful to first check the signal strength and battery life. If you have a good signal, it is best not to move too much.
