Root vegetables such as turnips and carrots are used to make soups and stews. It is easy enough to freeze them to use in any recipes, even in winter. Turnip must be blanched before freezing to preserve maximum nutrients during storage.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Preparing the turnip

  1. 1 Choose a turnip. Rinse the root vegetables under running water. Let the turnip soak a little in the water to loosen any dirt, then rinse it again.
  2. 2 Choose a medium to small size turnip. Set aside soft root vegetables for immediate use.
  3. 3 Peel the turnips. Throw away the cleaners or dispose of them in compost. Clean cleaners can be used to prepare broth.
  4. 4 Cut the turnips into approximately 1.5 cm cubes.

Part 2 of 3: Blanching the turnips

  1. 1 Heat water in a large saucepan. Bring the water to a high boil.
  2. 2 Prepare an ice bath in a clean sink or large bowl. Place it next to the stove.
  3. 3 Transfer the diced turnips to boiling water. Let her blanch for a couple of minutes.
  4. 4 Use a slotted spoon to remove the turnips.
    • Place the turnips in an ice bath. Keep the root vegetables on ice for two to five minutes.
  5. 5 Transfer the turnips to a colander, let the water drain.
  6. 6 Blanch no more than two glasses of turnips at a time, repeat the process several times.

Part 3 of 3: Freezing Turnip

  1. 1 Take a handful of the turnips that have been laid out in a colander. Dry the turnips with a kitchen towel or paper towel.
  2. 2 Pack your turnips in a sealed bag or freezer-safe container. Leave about 1.5 cm of free space.
  3. 3 Let all the air out of the bag. Seal the bag hermetically.
  4. 4 Store frozen turnips in the freezer for up to 10 months. You can store turnips in the refrigerator in this way for up to three weeks.

Tips

  • Do not forget that not only the "roots", but also the "tops" of turnips can be frozen. Blanch the herbs for two minutes, like the root vegetables, put in an ice bath, and drain in a colander.
