If you burned the carpet with a cigarette, you don't need to throw it away. Fixing your carpet is pretty easy! To restore a burnt carpet, follow the practical and affordable steps below.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Repairing Small Areas

  1. 1 Trim the burned edges of the carpet with sharp nail scissors.
  2. 2 Use a pair of tweezers to pull out the burnt fibers and discard them along with the scraps of burnt edges.
  3. 3 Use a sharp nail scissors to cut out some undamaged carpet strands from somewhere that won't be visible.
  4. 4 Place the clean fibers in a small plate. There should be enough of them to cover the burnt hole.
  5. 5 Apply strong household glue to the damaged area where you removed the burnt fibers.
  6. 6 Use tweezers to press the clean fibers to the adhesive surface.
  7. 7 Cover the repaired area with a heavy object, such as a thick book, for several days.
  8. 8 Comb the repaired area with a fine-toothed comb, or beat the new fibers with your fingers so that they do not stand out from the rest of the carpet.

Method 2 of 2: Repairing Large Areas

Too large burned areas cannot be covered with new fibers. They can be replaced with another piece of carpet. This can only be done if you have excess carpet remnants, or part of the carpet is not visible and you are not averse to cutting it off.

  1. 1 Prepare the burned area by scraping the burned fibers with a sharp knife or razor blade.
  2. 2 Vacuum the cut area and be sure to remove any burnt fibers from the damaged area.
  3. 3 Measure the burned area.
    • If you managed to cut it out in one piece, use it as a reference.
    • If you are unable to cut out the damaged part of the carpet in one piece, cut out a piece of paper the size of the damaged area plus 2 centimeters on each side.
  4. 4 Place a sample of the damaged area or paper template on the piece of carpet you are going to replace.
  5. 5 Trace the desired shape on the carpet with a water-based marker.
  6. 6 Use a sharp knife or razor to cut the piece of carpet you want to replace.
  7. 7 Apply carpet glue to the damaged area following the recommendations of the glue manufacturer.
  8. 8 Press the new piece of carpet into place.
  9. 9 Cover the replacement piece with a towel.
  10. 10 Place a heavy object on the repaired area and leave it on for a few days.
  11. 11 Gently fluff the fibers around the new seams with a fine-toothed comb or fingers so that the new piece is the same as the old piece of carpet.

Tips

  • The higher the pile of the carpet, the easier it is to hide new seams after the repair is complete.
  • Depending on the size and location of your furniture, consider just covering the burned spot with something.

Warnings

  • The hidden part of the carpet may differ in color from the area you want to replace. Sun and wear will discolor carpets, consider color variations before replacing fibers.
  • Entrust repairs to burned areas of carpet larger than 5 cm only to professionals.
