Installing a new toilet is much easier than it might seem at first glance. In fact, most people decide to personally remove the old toilet and replace it with a new one, without the help of a plumber or foreman. If you decide to install the toilet yourself, you should know how to do it. This article will teach you how to clean up an old toilet and replace it with a new one to bring some freshness to your bathroom.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Removing the Old Toilet

  1. 1 Before removing the old toilet, measure the distance between the wall and the toilet bolts screwed into the floor. A standard toilet should be 30 cm away from the wall. If your toilet meets this indicator, you can buy any standard model and install it in the existing place without much difficulty.
  2. 2 Turn off the water supply valve. This is to prevent water from pouring into the toilet cistern while you remove it.
  3. 3 Flush to remove water from the cistern and toilet.
  4. 4 Wear large rubber gloves to protect your hands from harmful bacteria in and around the toilet.
  5. 5 Empty the remaining water from the toilet and cistern. You can pour water in a small glass first, and then use a sponge. Pour the excess water into a bowl and then pour it out.
  6. 6 Remove the bolts that secure the cistern to the toilet.
  7. 7 Unscrew the water supply hose.
  8. 8 Then remove the cistern from the toilet. Put it in a convenient place where it won't spread bacteria.
  9. 9 Take a wrench and unscrew the bolts that secure the toilet to the floor.
  10. 10 Break the silicone layer by rocking the toilet back and forth. Don't rock the toilet too much, just put in a little effort. After separating the toilet from the floor, take it out of the bathroom along with the cistern.
  11. 11 Scrape off any remaining silicone near the drain hole. Since you will be applying a new layer of silicone, you need to remove as much of the old layer as possible.
  12. 12 Plug the drain hole with an old rag or something else. This will prevent sewer stench from entering your bathroom before you install a new toilet.

Method 2 of 2: Installing a new toilet

  1. 1 Replace the old edge of the drain hole with a new one. Unscrew the old edge and replace it with a new one. Then screw the new edge to the floor with the screws.
  2. 2 Apply a new silicone ring to the bottom of the toilet, around the drain. The silicone ring can be either regular or with an inward-directed edge.
  3. 3 Make sure the hem fits snugly against the floor. If the lip is loose, you may need to remove the silicone ring and reinstall. Tighten or completely replace the bolts if necessary.
  4. 4 Lift and place the toilet on the anchor bolts protruding from the floor. This part is a bit heavy and may not work right away.
  5. 5 With the bolts in place through the holes at the bottom of the toilet, rock the toilet from side to side to secure the toilet drain. Rock the toilet from side to side as you did when you removed the toilet (see above).
  6. 6 Insert the bolts through the holes in the toilet and tighten them slightly by hand. Do not twist too hard, or the toilet may crack.
  7. 7 Insert a spacer or something else to align the toilet.
  8. 8 Gradually light up the bolts at the bottom of the toilet with an adjustable wrench. Twist one side slightly and then move to the other. In other words, try to twist them all at the same time.
    • Twisting the bolts can lead to cracks in the toilet. Strike a balance between tightened and tightened bolts.
  9. 9 Install decorative rivets on the bolts screwed to the floor.
  10. 10 Carefully place the cistern on the toilet so that it fits exactly on the bolts screwed into the toilet. Tighten the bolts by hand. Be careful not to twist them.
  11. 11 Connect the water supply hose and turn on the water.
  12. 12 Seal the holes at the base of the toilet to ensure a good fit.
