The pomelo is a giant citrus fruit. It tastes very similar to grapefruit, but less bitter. In order to get to this sweet pulp, you must cut and peel the very thick rind and bitter membranes that separate each piece.

Steps

  1. 1 Cut off the "tip" of one end of the pomelo. The knife should cut off about 1.5 cm of the peel.
  2. 2 Make vertical cuts down the sides of the pomelo. Cut back about 1.5 cm of rind. Pull the cut incisions away from the fruit. Slide your fingers under the cut at the top (where you cut off the top) and pull back each piece of rind. It almost feels like working with Styrofoam.
  3. 3 Remove the bottom of the peel flower from the fruit. You will be left with a much smaller fruit covered with a white membrane; if you have a compost pile, throw the rind into it. Or you can make marmalade or candied fruit out of it.
  4. 4 Find the end of the dimpled pomelo.
  5. 5 Place your fingers in the hole and pull the pieces of the fruit apart. The pomelo should be cut into slices. A certain force must be applied. You can make this easier by cutting off some of the tough membrane that surrounds the fruit, but this is not necessary and you risk cutting the flesh (which is not good if you want to make neat slices).
  6. 6 Spread apart the membrane that surrounds each piece. Cutting the membrane that runs along the center of the fruit and the membrane at each end helps a lot - so all you're left with is the "flaps" between the slices.
    • The membrane along the bottom of the slice (outer fruit) will be difficult to remove and is best left on the flesh if you want the slices to remain intact.
    • If not, separate the flesh from the membrane piece by piece and put those pieces in your mouth, or make a Thai salad with pomelo and fried shrimp.
  7. 7 Ready.

Tips

  • You may feel a tingling sensation on the tip of your tongue. Don't be alarmed.
  • One fruit is usually enough for two people.
  • You can actually remove the skin any way you like, so feel free to experiment.
  • In North America, the pomelo season is from mid-January to mid-February.
