If your group has a shared Slack channel that you no longer use and you want to delete it, there are two ways to do this: just delete the channel or archive it. By deleting a channel, you will erase all its contents forever, as if there were never any correspondences. Archiving the channel will preserve the history of communication so that the group has access to important information. To delete or archive a channel, you must be the owner or administrator of the channel, and you must have access to a computer.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Delete a Channel

  1. 1 Open up Slack.com in the browser. The channel can be removed from the Slack site. The deletion process will erase the entire history of the channel, including any information shared by the channel members.
    • If you want to keep the option to restore the channel in the future, choose the backup method.
    • Private channels cannot be deleted, but they can be archived.
  2. 2 Sign in to your group. Click Sign In, then enter the group name and credentials.
  3. 3 Click on the group name in the left column to expand the settings menu.
  4. 4 Select the 'Team Settings' option from the menu. This will take you to the Settings & Permissions page.
  5. 5 Click on "Message Archives" in the left pane. You will see a list of your group's channels.
  6. 6 Click on the name of the group you want to delete. The content of the channel appears in the center pane. When you delete a channel, all of its content will disappear.
    • The process of deleting a channel will not in any way affect the files shared by members of the group. Under the All Files option, the files shared by the group members will still be displayed.
  7. 7 Click on “Delete Channel”. Remember that channel deletion cannot be reversed. If you'd rather not delete all of the feed's content, choose one of the following methods:
    • Click on “Archive this Channel” to deactivate the channel, but still retain access (and search) for its members to the content.
    • Click on “Convert to private channel” to save the channel members and remove them from the list. If you want to restrict members' access to content on the channel, you can remove members.
  8. 8 Confirm that you want to delete the channel. When the “Delete channel” pop-up window appears, check the “Yes, I am absolutely sure” checkbox and then click “Delete it”.

Method 2 of 3: Archiving a Channel

  1. 1 Open up Slack.com in the browser. If you no longer want your group to use the channel, but want to keep its contents, try archiving the channel.
    • The channel can be restored at any time.
    • If you want to permanently delete the chat history of a channel, select the "Delete Channel" method.
  2. 2 Enter the group. Click “Sign In” and then enter the group name and your credentials.
  3. 3 Join the channel you want to remove. Click on the channel name on the left side of the menu to join the channel.
  4. 4 Click on the gear icon to display the channel settings. This icon is located at the top of the page, next to the channel name. When you click on it, a small menu will appear.
  5. 5 Select the "Additional Options" option. After that, you will be taken to the settings page.
  6. 6 Click on “Archive this channel”. A confirmation window will appear on the screen.
  7. 7 Click “Yes, archive the channel”. Group members will no longer be able to chat in the channel.
    • Archived channels are still in the channel list on Slack, but instead of starting with "#" (for example, "#channel"), there will be a cell in front of the name.
    • To find an archived channel, click on its name in Slack, and then enter your search parameters in the search field.
  8. 8 Rebuild the channel. If you want to reactivate the channel, do the following:
    • go to the channel and click on the gear icon (next to the channel name);
    • select the "Un-archive" option.

Method 3 of 3: Turning off notifications

  1. 1 Launch the Slack app on your computer or mobile device. Disabling a channel allows you to disable notifications. You will still have access to the channel, but it will no longer appear in bold in the channel list.
    • Use this method if you are distracted by other members' channel or don't want to be annoyed by its notifications.
  2. 2 Enter the group. Follow the directions to join a group on Slack.
  3. 3 Join the channel for which you want to turn off notifications. Click or tap a channel name to join it.
  4. 4 Enter / mute in the message box and press ↵ Enter. If you are using a mobile device, simply tap the Send icon. Channel notifications will be disabled.
  5. 5 Enter / mute again to enable notifications. You can turn on notifications at any time.

Tips

  • Besides the #general channel, you can archive any channel.
