Method 2 of 2: Non-water based ink stains
Ballpoint ink and other permanent inks will leave stubborn stains. You may need to use several of the methods below to remove stubborn stains from your shirt.
alcohol method
Ink stains can often be removed with alcohol. Use 90% isopropyl alcohol, or 70% if you can find only that.
- 1 Place your shirt face down on a white paper towel.
- 2 Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol directly onto the stain. Be careful not to add too much rubbing alcohol, this will only enlarge the stain.
- 3 Blot the stain with a clean cloth to absorb the ink. Do not rub or wipe. Otherwise, you will increase it. Repeat these steps until the fabric absorbs the ink. Note that you need to change the fabric if it is soaked in ink.
- 4 Rinse your shirt in cold water.
- 5 Wash your shirt in the hottest water temperature that is safe for the fabric. Let it dry.
denatured alcohol method
Denatured alcohol is a solvent that can also help remove ink stains.
- 1 Lay your shirt down on a flat surface.
- 2 Soak a cotton swab in denatured alcohol and place it on the inked area.
- 3 Place a clean cotton swab over the stain to absorb the ink. Repeat this process until the cotton swab is soaked in ink. Change cotton pads if necessary.
- 4 Rinse your shirt in cold water.
- 5 Wash your shirt in the hottest water temperature that is safe for the fabric. Let it dry.
vinegar method
Vinegar has a dramatic effect on ink stains. Its acetic acid properties help remove stains quickly and effectively. In addition, vinegar is safe to use, readily available and environmentally friendly.
- 1 Lay your shirt down on a flat surface.
- 2 For the solution, in a small bowl, combine a tablespoon of dish soap and a glass of water.
- 3 Apply it to the stain using a clean cloth.
- 4 Place some white vinegar on the soiled area. Leave it on for 15 minutes.
- 5 Blot the stain with a clean cloth to absorb the ink. Change fabric as needed. Reapply the vinegar and repeat the entire process.
- 6 Rinse your shirt in cold water.
- 7 Wash your shirt in the hottest water temperature that is safe for the fabric. Let it dry.
Tips
- To remove stubborn stains, powerful detergents are used that can eventually remove stains, but there is also the possibility of discoloration of the material.
- Also, use hairspray instead of rubbing alcohol when removing ink stains from your shirt.
Warnings
- Work in a well-ventilated area. Alcohol fumes can make you nauseous.
- Don't put your shirt in the dryer until you are sure the stain is gone. The heat from the dryer will help set the stain.
