Microsoft Word has many predefined header and footer styles that you can insert into your document. With this, you can create your own header and footer in a Microsoft Word document.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Insert a header or footer using the toolbar

  1. 1 Click the Insert or Document Elements tab in the toolbar at the top of your document. Use Insert if you have a Windows computer and Document Elements if you have a Mac.
  2. 2 Select Header or Footer. From the drop-down list, select the format style of the area you want to insert into the document, and double-click the template.
  3. 3 Type the desired text in the "Enter text here" area or just inside the rectangle.
  4. 4 Close the header or footer when you're done. They will automatically appear on every page of your document.

Method 2 of 4: Insert a header or footer using a menu tab

  1. 1 Select the Insert tab from the top toolbar. Select Header or Footer from the drop-down list.
  2. 2 Paste your text or image where you want.
  3. 3 Click Close to save your changes and continue editing the document. The header and footer you just created will now be on every page of your document.

Method 3 of 4: Make the first page header or footer different from the rest of the document

  1. 1 Double-click the header and footer area on the first page.
  2. 2 Click the Styles tab that appears after that.
  3. 3 Select "Custom First Page Header" from the list of options.
  4. 4 Make changes to the existing header and footer of the first page. If you want the first page to have no header or footer, then just delete the text inside the header and footer area and exit edit mode.

Method 4 of 4: Add a page number to your header or footer

  1. 1 Click on the footer where you would like to add the page number.
  2. 2 Place your cursor where you would like the page number to be.
  3. 3 Select Page Number from the Insert tab inside the Header and Footer group.
  4. 4 Select "Current Position".
  5. 5 Choose a page number template from the available styles.
