Gardeners can start the planting season by growing seedlings indoors, where it is warm and free from frost. You can buy a variety of seeds that are sold in specialty stores and nurseries, and they are cheaper than ready-made seedlings. As an avid gardener, you will soon want to grow your own tomato or basil varieties from seeds. To do this, you can make simple cups from newspapers, which, moreover, completely decompose in the ground!

Steps

  1. 1 Take a sheet of newspaper.
  2. 2 Cut it in half. Cut multiple sheets at once to save time, but use one sheet for one cup.
  3. 3 Cut in half again to make a quarter sheet.
  4. 4 Take a small, round container like a spice jar. Wrap it with paper, leaving about an inch (2.5 cm) of protrusion from the edge where the bottom of the cup will be. Do not wrap too tight to remove the can properly.
  5. 5 Wrap the bottom like a gift wrapping.
  6. 6 Seal the bottom. Use scotch tape or biodegradable cellophane tape if available.
  7. 7 Remove the jar. With the cup upside down, fold the top edge inward. Then wrap again to stabilize and reduce the height of the glass.
  8. 8 Repeat. Make the required number of cups.
    • When it comes time to plant the seedlings in the garden, you can plant the plants right in the cups (just remember to remove the tape). Also break through the bottom of the cup.

Tips

  • Use different jars to make cups of different sizes.
  • Do not forget to harden the seedlings before planting in the garden.
  • Instead of scotch tape, you can use a water-flour paste, which must be allowed to dry overnight.

Warnings

  • American newspapers use soy ink that is environmentally friendly. Find out what newspaper ink is made from in your country. Note that colored glossy pages (or magazines) are better do not use for this purpose, unless the ink is plant-based.
