There are many ways to tell if a papaya is fresh and ripe. This article explains how to do this.

1. 1 Look for papayas with yellow and red patches on green skin.
2. 2 Squeeze the fruit lightly; if ripe, it should be slightly soft.
3. 3 Smell the fruit at the base where it has separated from the stem, you should smell the real papaya flavor.

Tips

• If you're still not sure if the papaya is ripe enough, you can always get a brown paper bag from the store and put the fruit in there. Place the bag in a sunny place for 1-2 days and the fruit will ripen soon.

Warnings

• Don't buy papaya that has mold at the base where the stem was. Such a fruit is spoiled.
