Brick-lined driveways will brighten the landscape around your home. They blend in well with their surroundings and are fairly easy to maintain. The main advantage of such tracks is that they can be made by hand, almost without using the services of specialists. After reading this article, you will learn how to lay these paths.

Steps

  1. 1 Mark the future track. Mark the edges with wooden pegs, and spray paint along the path.
    • Pull a rope or fishing line between the pegs; this will help you align the track and also control its height.
    • In addition, it will be necessary to carry out drainage so that water does not accumulate in the walkway.
  2. 2 Remove at least 30-36 cm (12-14 inches) of topsoil along the future walkway and compact the remaining soil.
    • Since you will need to remove a fairly large amount of soil and then move it somewhere, try to hire workers from a company that specializes in earthworks.
    • Workers will have the necessary equipment to dig the ditch and remove the earth to a suitable location.
  3. 3 Lay a stone foundation that will simultaneously support the bricks and drain the walkway. For this, you can use crushed stone or finer gravel, whichever is easier to obtain in your area. You will also need stone slabs with holes in the middle.
  4. 4 Place the stone in small heaps on the bottom of the previously dug ditch. Then spread it evenly over the bottom using a shovel and garden rake.
  5. 5 Place the stone slabs in stacks of 2 or better in 3, holding them together with a vibrating plate. After processing with a vibrating plate, their surfaces will adhere quite firmly to each other.
  6. 6 The slabs should be high enough to leave room on top of them for a 5 cm (about 2 ") layer of sand and 7.5 cm (about 3") bricks. A rope or line that was previously stretched between the pegs will help you with this.
  7. 7 Cover the stone base with a landscape cloth to prevent grass from sprouting in the gaps between the walkway slabs. This will prevent the sand from sinking between the stones.
  8. 8 Place a 5 cm (about 2 inches) layer of sand on top of the fabric, which will then be covered with bricks.
  9. 9 Install the plastic brick stopper following the manufacturer's instructions.
  10. 10 Starting at the center of one of the edges of the walkway, lay out the bricks, keeping an equal distance between them using spacers. Starting from the center line of the track, you will thus ensure an equal number of bricks on its sides; the track will look even and symmetrical.
  11. 11 Every 0.5-0.6 meters (2 feet), apply a 1 m (3 ft) long, 5 x 10 cm (2 x 4 in.) Plank across the walkway to the bricks. Using a wooden or rubber mallet on it, flatten the bricks by compacting them in the sand bed.
  12. 12 Lay out the second row of bricks, focusing on the joints of the bricks of the center line. You will end up with a chevron pattern similar to laying bricks in the wall of a house.
  13. 13 Repeat the previous three steps until you've finished laying out the entire track.
  14. 14 Fill the joints between the bricks with stone sand by filling it in the crevices and compacting it there.
  15. 15 Pour water over the lined path with a hose, washing the sand from the surface of the bricks into the joints between them. This will fill in the gaps between the bricks more tightly and clean their surface.

Tips

  • If you need to split bricks, use a stone chisel and hammer, a bricklayer's hammer, or a brick cutter.
  • The vibrating plate can be rented from any construction company or a store that sells paving stones and paving materials.
  • Chevron masonry is not the only option. You can try other designs as well.
  • To control the level of the track, you can use a board equal to the width of the track, with a level of 1.3 m (4 feet) tied to it; this simple device will also help to dig a ditch more evenly and lay a drainage system.

Warnings

  • If the house is not your property, check with the owner and get their consent before starting work.
  • Always wear safety glasses when cutting bricks.
  • When laying the brick path, wear knee pads to avoid bruising your legs.
