Whether you have a small dog that can't run up stairs, or an elderly or injured dog that needs help getting in and out of the car, a specially made ramp will make life easier for you and your pet. Follow these simple steps to create a ramp for your pet.

Steps

  1. 1 Calculate the length of the ramp. If you need the ramp to cover a certain number of steps of the stairs, measure the distance from its base to the top and add 10 cm.
  2. 2 Place two 5x5cm beams on a hard surface. Measure the length you need. Place the appropriate marks on both bars.
  3. 3 Use a saw to saw off the beams along the marks. They will become the frame of the ramp.
  4. 4 Place a sheet of plywood on a flat surface. Place two beams on it at a distance of 30 cm from each other.
  5. 5 Measure and mark the length and width of the plywood part of the ramp. Cut out the part according to the markings you made.
  6. 6 Measure and cut 30cm pieces from the remaining pieces of timber to create steps on the ramp to make it easier for your dog to navigate.
  7. 7 Nail the plywood to the frame securely.
  8. 8 Spread the rungs (steps) at an even distance from each other on top of the ramp, nail them securely.
  9. 9 Examine the ramp. Pay attention to chips and loose nails. Remove any bumps or sharp edges that could injure your dog.
  10. 10 Paint the ramp with waterproof paint. You can also attach carpet to the ramp using glue or a construction stapler. A carpeted ramp should only be used within the walls of the home.

Tips

  • Use sturdy plywood for the ramp. For heavier dogs, thicker plywood should be used to support their weight reliably.
  • Visit your nearest carpet store to determine the best-priced ramp carpet option. If the store does not have any unnecessary scraps, then you will probably be able to offer you some leftovers at a reduced price.
  • If you do not plan on covering the ramp with carpet, sandpaper all edges of the wood to protect the dog's paws.
  • Consider the size of the dog when determining the width of the ramp. Small dogs require narrower ramps, while larger dogs require wider ramps to walk safely on.
