If you want to curl your hair but don't have a curling iron, there are a number of ways to get beautiful curls using a hair dryer. If you have naturally curly hair, you can compact your curls with a diffuser on your hair dryer. Braiding your damp hair and then drying it with a blow dryer is a great way to straighten your hair, and using a round brush with a blow dryer to curl your hair also works great. Consider setting your hair with hairspray after curling if you have naturally straight hair so that it looks styled all day long.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Braid and dry straight hair

  1. Dampen your hair and detangle it. To turn braids into curls, your hair must be wet. Therefore, braid your hair right after you shower or wet your hair beforehand. Use a brush or comb to get rid of any tangles or knots.
    • Towel dry your hair right after you shower so it's damp but not dripping, or dampen it by wetting a brush with water and brushing your hair with it.
    • A wide tooth comb works well on damp hair as it causes less breakage.
  2. Dry the braids with a hair dryer on medium heat. Once every section of your hair is braided, turn a hair dryer on to medium heat and start drying your hair. Place the nozzle on the braids and slowly move the blow dryer up and down the entire length of the hair to dry it evenly.
    • Do not hold the hair dryer in one place without moving it so that you do not damage your hair.
    • Touch the center of the braids with your fingers to make sure they are completely dry.
  3. Secure the top layer of your hair. Make two sections of hair, the top and bottom layer, by dividing them at the top of your ears. Use an elastic or a large clip to gather the top layer of your hair and secure it to your head. This will make it easier to curl the bottom layer of your hair first.
    • If you have super thick hair, consider separating your hair into more than two sections to make it easier, such as a top and bottom layer divided into two sections.
  4. Place a round brush in the center of an inch to 1 inch wide section of hair. Choose a round brush depending on the type of curls you are going for: a small round brush will create tighter curls, while a large round brush will create larger curls. Pick part of the hair from the bottom layer and place the brush right in the center.
    • The brush is placed in the center so you can twist your hair around the brush while brushing down.
    • For the best curls, use a metal round brush.
  5. Continue twisting and drying 2.5 to 5 cm wide sections of the hair to complete the look. Go through your entire head and select sections of hair to flip and dry with the round brush and blow dryer. When you are done with the bottom layer of your hair, loosen the top layer and keep curling until your hair is completely styled.
    • Consider fixing the curls with hairspray.

Method 3 of 3: Dry naturally curly hair with a diffuser

  1. Apply a curling cream or leave-in conditioner to damp hair. This will make your curls more compact and smooth. Look for products that state on the label that they moisturize and strengthen curls. Squirt a dollop of the product into your palm and massage it into your hair, starting at the roots. While your hair shouldn't be soaking wet, it should be damp, just like if you just towel dry it.
    • If you need to brush your hair, do it before putting the product in your hair.
    • Use a mousse specifically for curly hair or a regular leave-in conditioner.
    • Consider using a heat protectant on your hair instead of mousse so that the blow dryer doesn't cause damage.
  2. Use a diffuser to dry your curls without causing frizz. If you just use the normal blow dryer nozzle to dry your naturally curly hair, your hair is likely to frizz. Secure the diffuser at the end of the mouthpiece so that the air is distributed more evenly.
    • If you don't already have a diffuser for your hair dryer, buy one at a major department store or online.
    • It is best to use the diffuser on a medium to low setting.
  3. Dry your hair with the blow dryer until it is about 80% dry. If you use the diffuser on your hair until it is completely dry, it can dry out your hair too much and cause frizz. Instead, use the diffuser to dry your hair until it is mostly dry, then let your hair dry naturally further to keep the curls you've created.
    • Test your hair to see if it is already mostly dry by touching it. If your hair feels slightly damp in several places, it is time to let it air dry further.
