How to make a voltaic battery from lemon.
Steps
- 1 Rub the zinc strip and copper dime with sandpaper.
- 2 Squeeze the lemon without damaging the rind. Just squeeze the juice out of it.
- 3 Make two cuts in the crust, about 1 to 2 cm apart.
- 4 Insert a copper coin into one slot and a zinc strip into the other.
- 5 Check if voltage is generated by touching the voltmeter lead to a coin and a strip.
Tips
- If instead of a copper coin, you have copper tape, the experiment works better because you can push the tape deeper into the slot.
- You can replace the zinc strip with a galvanized nail.
- You can replace the copper coin with a nickel or silver one.
- You can replace the voltmeter with a speaker from an old transistor.
- All things can be replaced, experiment.
- This is called a liquid cell, a conventional battery is called a dry cell battery.
Warnings
- Always use caution when working with electricity.
- The strength in one cell is not very high. To light a light bulb, you need several cells together (two or more).
What do you need
- Zinc strip
- Small copper coin
- One lemon
- Sandpaper
