Making nails with tape is a fun and easy project for kids. And since you can easily apply nail polish to sticky tape, it can even be a way for adults to try out a design on long nails before choosing a longer look.

To step

Part 1 of 2: Making false nails with adhesive tape

  1. Choose a clear and shiny adhesive tape. Regular single-sided tape is easiest to use on nails. It can be completely see-through or a bit unclear, depending on what you like.
    • Adhesive tape is a clear tape called Sellotape or Scotchtape in some countries.
  2. Stick a piece of masking tape on your nail. Cut a strip of tape about twice the length of your own nail. Stick the tape on your finger so that it covers the entire nail and sticks out further, making the entire nail look shiny. Press the sides of the tape down firmly so that the tape bends like a real long nail would.
    • If the tape is too wide, ask an adult to cut the tape with scissors.
  3. Cover the bottom of the tape with nail polish. Put nail polish on the sticky bottom of the tape. This will make the nails last longer and won't stick to anything, but still be careful not to touch anything while you wait for the polish to dry.
  4. File the nail on the end of the tape (optional). If you have nail buffer, use side 3 or 4 to gently rub the bottom of the nail. Do this over the bottom of the tape to file it down a bit, making the line less visible.

Part 2 of 2: Decorating the fake nails

  1. Use nail polish if you have one. You can use the nail polish in the same way as on your normal nails. There are tons of designs you can make, and you don't need to apply a base coat if you're using masking tape. Choose your favorite colors and start decorating your nails.
    • Always wait for a color to dry before applying another color to it.
    • A clear nail polish after everything is dry provides a nice glossy finish.
  2. Try the splash method. Since you already have tape, you can try a decorating method that uses it. You will also need a small plastic straw and a layer of newspaper to put underneath as it can get a bit messy. This works best with different colors of nail polish.
    • Wrap the fingers around your nail with more tape to protect them from the polish. Be careful not to overlap the tape with your fake nail or you could tear it off.
    • Dip a thin straw in nail polish, place it just above your nail and blow through it. This will cause the nail polish to splash onto the fake nail.
    • Repeat this with other colors. Since there is now nail polish on the tip of the straw, you should put the next color on a plastic plate or piece of newspaper and dip the straw in it instead of directly in the nail polish bottle.
    • Let it dry when you're done and remove the tape protecting your fingers.
  3. Decorate your nails with other methods. If you don't have nail polish, you can decorate the tape with small stickers. You can also draw something on it with a permanent marker, although it will most likely smudge unless you put a second layer of tape over the drawing very carefully.
