Both music lessons and fun handicraft projects can help stimulate the child's thinking and develop hand-eye coordination and other skills. Making drums from the simplest household items will involve your kids in crafts and music. This activity is neither expensive nor time consuming. To learn how to make children's drums, you just need to find the simplest materials, assemble the drums, decorate them and start playing.

Steps

  1. 1 Find cylindrical containers. A drum body or "frame" can be made from virtually any cylindrical container. For example, large packages of coffee, oatmeal, or nesquik will do. Remove the lids from the cans. If any sharp edges remain, sand them with sandpaper or carefully cover them with masking tape.
  2. 2 Cut off the material for the drum head. The membrane is an impact surface and can be made from a variety of materials. Options are wax paper, vinyl cloth, or even stretched latex balloons. A circle with a diameter of about 5 cm larger than the opening of the cylindrical container should be cut out of the material. This gives you enough space to attach the membrane to the drum body.
  3. 3 Attach the membrane to the body. Place a circle of wax paper (or other material) over the opening of the jar. Place the edges of the paper against the sides of the can and secure with several rubber bands. Make sure the membrane adheres well and smooth its surface.
  4. 4 Cut off the material to decorate the drum body. If you want to decorate the sides of the drum, you can cover it with any material: tracing paper, ordinary office paper, or even self-adhesive paper. Cut a rectangle out of the paper and gently wrap it around the can with a slight overlap for gluing.
  5. 5 Decorate paper intended for decoration. After cutting off the paper, let the children decorate it to their liking. You can use anything here, from markers and crayons to glitter, felt and ribbons. After decorating the paper, glue it to the drum body.
  6. 6 Play pre-made drums. When the glue is dry, the drums can be played. The ideal drumsticks can be made from chopsticks or pencils, but children can play with their fingers as well. Just do not play too hard, otherwise the membrane may break or become unusable.

Tips

  • Additional small instruments can be made in addition to the drums. So, you can make a set of clumsy maracas by gluing two paper plates with rice inside.

Warnings

  • Improvised drums for kids can be made from metal pots and pans, but keep in mind that the sound will be unbearably loud.
