Resetting the Epson ink cartridge chip will extend the life of the cartridge and also save money on buying a new cartridge. You can reset the Epson cartridge chip using a special chip reset device, or by swapping different chips.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using a special device to reload the cartridge chips

1. 1 Make sure the chip reset device you are using matches your Epson printer model. Whether the tool will be effective for your printer cartridge can be found in the packaging.
2. 2 Remove the empty cartridge from your printer.
3. 3 Align the ink cartridge with the markings at the base of the cartridge chip reloader. Each tool has its own unique shape to accommodate cartridges from different Epson printers.
4. 4 Firmly press the contacts on the device against the contacts of the chip on the cartridge until the light on it flashes red. This will indicate that the reboot device has detected and connected to the cartridge.
5. 5 Continue to hold the reloading device against the cartridge until the light on it turns green and starts blinking. Your chip will now be rebooted and ready to use.

Method 2 of 2: Rearranging the Cartridge Chips

1. 1 Remove the color and black ink cartridges from the printer.
2. 2 Use a single-sided razor blade to remove excess plastic from the top post of the cartridge holding the chip.
3. 3 Pull the chip up and out of the cartridge.
4. 4 Repeat steps # 2 and # 3 with another cartridge.
5. 5 Place the chip from the color cartridge into the black cartridge and the chip from the black cartridge into the color cartridge. This way you trick the printer into treating an empty cartridge as full, depending on how much ink is in the other cartridge.
6. 6 Place both cartridges back into your Epson printer.
7. 7 Press the ink change button on the printer to signal the printer that you have rearranged the cartridges. Your computer monitor will indicate that the empty cartridge is now full, depending on how much ink was in the other cartridge.
8. 8 Press the ink change button on the printer again and remove both cartridges from the printer.
9. 9 Swap the cartridge chips with each other so that they are in place.
10. 10 Press the ink change button on the printer to prepare the product for printing. Both the black and color cartridges will display the same ink levels, and you can extract more ink from an empty Epson cartridge that originally needed to be replaced.

Tips

• Consider purchasing a refill cartridge from other manufacturers that is compatible with your Epson printer. Some replacement cartridges come with auto-reset chips that can be replaced multiple times before you need to purchase a new cartridge.
• If the device does not light up when pressed against the cartridge, try installing new batteries. When the lights on the chip reset device do not light up, either the batteries are dead or the device is incompatible with your cartridge chip.
