The Code of Federal Laws provides a list of the rules and regulations of the federal government. It is divided into 50 points, which in turn are divided into chapters and parts. Follow these instructions to cite the code of federal laws in the document.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Find the parts to be cited

1. 1 Find the name of the law in the code of federal laws. You can find an electronic copy of the code of laws in the national archives or on the archives administration website, as well as on the website of the government department.
2. 2 Find the number in the name of the law. The number in the title of a law indicates the department of government to which the law applies. For example, 10 refers to energy.
3. 3 Find the chapter of the law number. For example, Chapter 2 deals with the energy department.
4. 4 Select the part of the law that you want to quote.
5. 5 Determine in which year the law was last changed.

Method 2 of 2: Cite the Law

1. 1 Use legal form of quotation. A citation of Article 10, Chapter 2, Part 451, as revised in 2006, must include the Article, Code Abbreviation, Chapter, Part and Year of revision in parentheses:
   • 10CFR2.451 (2006).
2. 2 Quote MLA style code of federal laws. Use the title of the article, then the number, then the letters "CFR", the number of the part of the law and the year of revision.
   • For example, a citation of article 10, part 451.6, revised in 2006 would read: "Renewable Energy Production Incentives." 10 “CFR” 451.6. 2006
3. 3 Cite in APA style.
   • To quote in this style, you must use the title of the law, the article number, the letters "CFR", the chapter number and the year of revision in parentheses. A citation of Article 10, Chapter 2, revised in 2006, would look like this: Renewable Energy Production Incentives, 10 C.F.R. pt. 2 (2006).
   • If you want to quote a law within the text, use the title of the law and the year of revision. For example, (Renewable Energy Production Incentives, 2006).
4. 4 Use the Chicago citation style.
   • Links will contain the words “Code of Federal Regulations”, the title of the law, the article number and the part number. For example: Code of Federal Regulations, Renewable Energy Production Incentives, title 10, sec. 451.6.
   • The quote inside the text will look like this: (Code of Federal Regulations, title 10, sec. 451.6)
   • References in MLA style: U.S. Code of Federal Regulations. Title 10. Renewable Energy Production Incentives. 2006.
   • APA-style bibliography: U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. 2006. Code of federal regulations. Title 10. Renewable Energy Production Incentives.

• Not every citation style guide provides guidelines for citing the Code of Federal Laws. Some of the citations are based on general guidelines for citing government documents.
