A license or permit to carry a gun is required in the state of Georgia only if you wish to carry a gun with you at all times. When purchasing or registering a weapon, this license is not necessary. To apply for this permit, you will need to visit your county sheriff's office to begin the licensing process. You will also need to pay the appropriate fee and go through federal and state background checks, during which they will consider your story about connections with the underworld, crime, delinquency, drug addiction, alcoholism and mental illness. After your county sheriff's office approves your license application, you will receive a license to carry a weapon.

Steps

1. 1 Determine that you are eligible for a Georgia gun license. You can obtain this license only if you are 21 years of age or older, are not wanted, have not been convicted of felonies, do not suffer from drug or alcohol addiction or mental illness.
2. 2 Pay the required entry fee.
   • Bring $ 15 (€ 10) for the fee and $ 5 (€ 3) for fingerprinting. If your license is denied, regardless of the reason, the fees are non-refundable.
   • Application fee and fees for fingerprinting may vary by county of Georgia. Contact your county sheriff's office prior to your visit to determine the amount of fees you will need to pay.
3. 3 Determine the location of your county sheriff's office. You can find its address on the Internet or in the telephone directory.
   • Go to any internet search engine page and enter your county and keywords such as Sheriff's Office. You will be presented with a list of results that include your county's sheriff's office website.
   • Follow the link to the Sheriff's Office page to find his address and contact information.
   • If you do not have Internet access, find your county's sheriff's office contact information in your local telephone directory, or call the Georgia Department of Public Safety General Directorate at 404-624-7000.
4. 4 Visit the County Sheriff's Office. Each county in the state of Georgia requires an application to obtain a local government weapons license.
   • Bring money with you to pay for the application and fees for fingerprinting, as well as a photo ID to prove your age and identity. Acceptable types of photographs for identification in Georgia are driver's license or ID.
5. 5 Complete an application for a permit to carry a weapon. After you arrive at your county sheriff's office, you will be presented with an application to complete. After you complete and submit your application, the sheriff's office will notify you if you have received a license to carry a weapon.
   • On the application, you will be required to enter personal information and history of connection with the underworld, if necessary. You will also be asked to explain the reason why you want to obtain this license.

Tips

• Georgia recognizes and accepts out-of-state weapons permits. You will not need to apply for a license to carry a gun if you already have a license from one of the following states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, or Wyoming.
