This article will show you how to get a Google Voice virtual phone number. This can be done for free with a Google account. To change your Google Voice number to another, you need to delete the existing number, wait 90 days and select a new number.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: How to Sign Up for Google Voice

Attention: since the Google Voice service does not work in Russia, open the site of this service through a proxy server.

1. 1 Open the Google Voice website. Go to https://voice.google.com/ in your computer's web browser. The Google Voice setup page will open if you are already logged into Google.
   • If you are not already signed in to your Google account, enter your email address and password.
2. 2 Find a city. Click on the line in the center of the page, and then enter the city name or area code (for example, 96703). As you enter text, a list of phone numbers appears below the line.
3. 3 Select a phone number. Click on the blue Select button to the right of the phone number you like.
   • You may first have to select a city from the menu below the search bar.
4. 4 Click on VERIFY (Confirm). This blue button is in the center of the window. You will be taken to a page where you need to confirm your real phone number.
5. 5 Enter your real phone number. Do this on the line in the middle of the page.
6. 6 Click on SEND CODE (Send code). You will find this option in the lower right corner of the window. Google Voice will send a text message to your phone with a code.
7. 7 Find the code. On your phone, open a text messaging app, open a message from Google (usually the subject is a five-digit number), and look for a six-digit code.
   • The message from Google will be something like “123456 is your Google Voice verification code” (123456 is the Google Voice verification code).
8. 8 Enter a code. Enter the six-digit code in the line in the center of the Google Voice page.
9. 9 Click on VERIFY (Confirm). It's in the lower-right corner of the window.
10. 10 Click on CLAIM (State). This will confirm that you are going to use the phone number with your Google Voice account.
    • The specified option may not be displayed (this depends on the phone number). In this case, proceed to the next step.
11. 11 Click on FINISH (To complete). Your phone number will be verified and you'll be taken to the Google Voice page.
    • Any outgoing messages and phone calls displayed on this page will use your Google Voice virtual number.

Part 2 of 2: How to get a new phone number

1. 1 Open the Google Voice website. Go to https://voice.google.com/ in your computer's web browser. If you are already logged into Google, your Google Voice page will open.
   • If you are not already signed in to your Google account, enter your email address and password.
2. 2 Click on ☰. It's in the upper-left corner of the page. A menu will open on the left.
3. 3 Click on Settings (Settings). This option is on the menu. A new menu will open.
4. 4 Click on Phone numbers (Phone numbers). You will find this option in the upper half of the Settings menu.
5. 5 Click on DELETE (Delete). This option is below and to the right of your current Google Voice phone number, which appears at the top of the page. A new page will open.
6. 6 Click on the link Delete (Delete). This link is next to your Google Voice number on a new page.
   • Do not click the gray “Delete” button next to your email address.
7. 7 Click on Proceed (Proceed). Your Google Voice virtual phone number will be removed from your Google account.
8. 8 Wait 90 days. When you delete the old phone number, the new number cannot be selected until 90 days have passed.
   • If you would like to restore your old number within a 90-day period, click ☰ on your page, click on Legacy Google Voice at the bottom of the pop-up window and click on your old Google Voice number in the lower left corner of the page.
9. 9 Choose a new number. When 90 days are up, open your Google Voice page, click ☰> Phone number and click Choose on the right side of the Phone number section. Now follow these instructions to choose a new phone number.

Tips

• Google Voice is a convenient way to make calls and send text messages without divulging your real phone number.

Warnings

• Only one Google Voice virtual number can be registered to one real phone number.
