Update your jeans by dyeing them a dark color or bleaching them and giving them a bright color. Denim absorbs dye very well, and due to the durable construction of the fabric, it can be bleached and re-dyed several times. You can dye jeans in the washing machine using the wash, or dye them in the bucket using the bright Rit dye.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Painting jeans in the washing machine

1. 1 Make sure you have a front loading washing machine with very adjustable cycles. Newer washing machines that control temperature, time and fabric fragility are best.
2. 2 buy Dillon jeans detergent and dye or any other product. This method is suggested for dyeing jeans in black, brown or blue colors, as this agent is suitable for denim. Other colors are available but require additional salt and other painting methods.
   • If you're worried about painting your washing machine or sink, we recommend using the bucket painting method. If the water from your washing machine drains into the utility sink, it is likely that it will stain, at least for a short time.
   • You will need one bag of dye for each pair of jeans that you want to dye.
3. 3 Buy pre-dye from Dillon or another brand if your jeans are currently a different color than blue, black, or white. Using a pre-dyeing agent will bring your jeans back to a neutral color, so you get the correct shade after painting.
4. 4 Set your washing machine to the hottest cycle. This is a 40 degree Celsius wash cycle or a hot wash cycle.
5. 5 Pour the dye into the detergent compartment of the washing machine. Start the dye machine. Make sure it runs a full cycle with the maximum amount of water.
6. 6 Wash your jeans a second time. Use a mild laundry detergent. Set the cycle to a different hot setting.
7. 7 Take out your jeans and air dry. Start your washing machine again with a rinse cycle to remove any residue.

Method 2 of 2: Painting jeans in a bucket

1. 1 Pre-wash brand new jeans to remove labels and other additives. You should also wash them if they are very dirty.
2. 2 Bleach your jeans initially if you want to dye them bright colors. Pour a mixture of one part bleach and one part water into a bucket. Submerge your jeans in a bucket of this mixture until they turn yellow or white, or for a maximum of one hour.
   • Rinse your jeans very well. You can dye them immediately after bleaching.
3. 3 Find a bucket or plastic container that holds 15-18 liters of water. Find a place to place it. You can install it on your lawn if you are afraid of splashing dye in the bathroom or kitchen surfaces.
4. 4 Heat a saucepan full of water on the stove top. Boiling the water is the best way to ensure the dye works well. However, you can also use very hot tap water. Pour water into your bucket.

7. 7 Dissolve one cup of salt in two glasses of water. Pour the mixture into a bucket of paint. Stir well to form a homogeneous paste.
8. 8 Add one dose of dish soap. Mix it in a bucket of paint and salt.
9. 9 Soak your jeans in warm water. Wring them out. Put your jeans in a bucket of your dye.
10. 10 Stir the jeans continuously for 20 minutes. Then stir them every 10 minutes for up to one hour. The longer you leave the jeans in the dye, the darker the color will be.
11. 11 Rinse your jeans in cold water until they run out completely clean. Wring out the jeans and then put them in the washing machine. Use a tray or bucket to keep the dye from dripping onto the floor.
12. 12 Wash your jeans in warm water using a mild detergent. Dry your jeans. Wash jeans separately from all items for another 2-3 washes.

Tips

• Wash freshly dyed jeans separately for the next two to three washes. In addition, dye can stain the fabric, just like new denim. To make sure the paint fades, take an old white towel or T-shirt and wash with it. If things are colored, jeans will still fade.
• To make boiled jeans, tie, bleach, or use white jeans. Then mix several colors of Rit dye, adding a little salt and a little dish soap to each cup of hot dye. Wet the jeans and then apply the dye colors to the jeans. Finish your design in the front and back. Let the dye soak for thirty minutes or more if not already absorbed. Then wash them warm. Hang your jeans to dry.
