Yogurt is incredibly healthy, but did you know it's great for your skin too? Yogurt is naturally exfoliating, so it leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth. It is also moisturizing and brightening, so it can be used to even out skin tone. You can always just smear yogurt on your face and call it a mask, but you can get even more out of it if you add extras like honey, cinnamon or cocoa powder. The best thing about yogurt masks is that they are all natural and preferably organic, so you don't have to worry about chemicals on your face!

To step

Method 1 of 2: Make a yogurt-based face mask

  1. Place a tablespoon of plain yogurt in a small bowl. Preferably use full-fat Greek yogurt - it is much more moisturizing than full-fat or low-fat yogurt. Do not use flavored yogurt, which contains too many sweeteners and other added ingredients.
    • Yogurt is very good for the skin because it naturally acts as a peeler, clarifying and moisturizing. It also helps lighten dark spots and reduce blemishes.
  2. Stir in a teaspoon of honey with a fork. Keep stirring until the honey is evenly mixed into the yogurt. Honey is one of the best things you can put on your skin. It is naturally moisturizing and antibacterial. It will provide your skin with moisture while treating acne.
  3. Pull your hair back and wet your face with warm water. If you're wearing a nice shirt, it might also be a good idea to drape an old towel over your chest and shoulders. By first washing your face with warm water, your pores will open and a mask will be even more effective.
  4. Apply the mask to your face, but make sure to avoid the area around your eyes. If you can make another mask, you can apply it to your neck as well. You can only apply the mask with your fingers. For a more nourishing experience, gently brush the mask with a foundation makeup brush.
  5. Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. The mask will dry and "flake off," which is fine. The mask will still do its "job", providing your face with moisture.
  6. Rinse the mask with warm water and sprinkle your face with cool water to tighten the pores. Then gently pat your face dry with a clean towel. Your skin may feel a little stiff and tight after this mask - if so, apply some more moisturizer after the treatment. EXPERT TIP

Exfoliate your skin with a honey and oatmeal yogurt mask. In a small bowl, combine a teaspoon of each of the following ingredients: honey, finely ground oatmeal, and yogurt. Apply the mask to your face and wait 15 minutes. Then rinse the mask off with warm water. Then splash your face with cool water.

    • Oatmeal is a natural, yet gentle exfoliant.
    • If you can't get ground oatmeal, you can grind your own using a blender or coffee grinder.
  7. Make your skin more radiant by adding some strawberries to the mask. In a small bowl, mash two ripe strawberries with a fork. Add a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of yogurt and stir to combine. Apply the mask to your face and rinse with warm water after 15 minutes. Splash your face with cool water to close your pores.
    • Strawberries are naturally bright and lightening.
    • For something more exfoliating your skin, add half a teaspoon of finely ground almonds to it.
  8. Make a yogurt mask with avocado and olive oil for extra moisture. In a small bowl, mash a quarter of a ripe avocado using a fork. Stir in a teaspoon of yogurt and a teaspoon of olive oil. Divide the mask over your face and leave it on for 15 minutes. Wash off the mask with warm water and then splash your face clean with cool water to close the pores.
    • Avocados and olive oil are naturally nourishing and moisturizing.
    • For a moisturizing and antibacterial face mask, use honey instead of olive oil.
    • Olive oil can clog pores. If you're concerned about this, use jojoba oil, sunflower oil, or sweet almond oil.
  9. Add some cocoa powder for a rejuvenating effect. In a small bowl, mix two teaspoons of yogurt, one teaspoon of cocoa powder, and one teaspoon of honey. Smear the mask on the face and wash it off with warm water after 15 minutes. Afterwards, splash your face with cool water and apply some moisturizing cream if necessary.
    • Cocoa powder has natural anti-aging properties. It will help prevent sun damage and make fine lines less visible.
  10. Wake up your skin in the morning with a coffee-based mask. In a small bowl, combine three tablespoons of yogurt, two tablespoons of ground coffee, two tablespoons of cocoa powder, and one tablespoon of honey. Apply the mask to your face. Wait 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off with warm water. Splash your face with cool water when you are done.
    • Coffee helps to tighten your pores and makes the skin less oily and prevents a bloated appearance and swelling.
    • Cocoa and coffee both have anti-aging and detoxifying properties.
  11. Reduce puffiness and add a healthy glow with a hint of cinnamon and nutmeg. Combine a tablespoon of yogurt with a teaspoon of honey. Stir in some cinnamon and nutmeg and spread the mask over your face. Wait 7-10 minutes, then rinse the mask off with warm water. Then splash your face with cool water to close your pores.
    • Not only is cinnamon naturally antibacterial, but it also gives the skin a healthy glow.
    • Nutmeg plumps the skin, making wrinkles and fine lines less visible.
  12. Add some lemon juice for a radiant effect. Mix a tablespoon of yogurt and 2-3 drops of lemon juice in a small bowl. For extra moisture and nutrition, add another teaspoon of honey. Divide the mask over your face and wait 10-15 minutes. Wash off the mask with warm water, then splash your face with cool water to shrink your pores.
    • Lemon juice lightens the skin. Some people think it can also help fight acne and blackheads.

Another option for your mask is turmeric. Turmeric can make your skin yellowish if used incorrectly, but if you use a recipe from a reputable source, turmeric makes an excellent mask. Don't use the mask too often - once a week is fine. Turmeric does not dry out your skin and has anti-inflammatory properties.

Tips

  • For a super simple face mask, just smear some yogurt over your face. Leave it there for 15-20 minutes before rinsing it off.
  • Don't use sweetened or flavored yogurt. They contain too many sweeteners and other ingredients that can irritate your skin.
  • Do a little test on your wrist to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction.
  • You can use this face mask once or twice a week, depending on your skin type. Some people can even use it up to three times a week.
  • Full-fat organic Greek yogurt will give the best results, but plain organic yogurt works well too.
  • Hang over a bowl of steaming, warm water for a few minutes before applying the mask. The hot steam will open your pores and make the mask more effective.
  • Yogurt is great in relieving sunburn - it has a natural cooling effect on the skin. Apply some yogurt to a sunburnt area and wash it off with cool water after 10-15 minutes.

Warnings

  • Make sure you are not allergic to any of these ingredients before applying them to your face.
  • Do not use lemon face masks in the morning. Lemon juice makes the skin extra sensitive to sunlight and you can therefore get nasty sunburn. Even if you rinse the mask off completely, there is still a chance that some residue may have been left behind.

Necessities

  • 1 tablespoon of plain yogurt
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • Lemon juice (optional)
  • Small bowl
