The PlayStation 2 was one of the most popular video game consoles in the world, but connecting it to a modern TV is a bit problematic. Many modern TVs do not have an AV connector through which the PlayStation 2 connects. But there are several ways to connect the PlayStation 2 to a TV.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Connecting the PlayStation 2

  1. 1 Identify the connectors on your TV. The method of connecting the set-top box to the TV depends on the types of connectors available. Different connectors provide different picture quality. The connectors are located on the back and (sometimes) the side or front of the TV.
    • Composite / Stereo AV... This is the most common way to connect your PlayStation 2 to your TV, receiver, or VCR. Composite cables have three plugs: yellow (video) and red and white (audio). This cable is included with the PlayStation 2. Newer TVs may not have this connector.
    • Component / YCbCr... This is the best way to connect your PlayStation 2 to modern TVs, as most TVs have this connector. Component cables provide the best picture quality. Component cables have five plugs: red, blue and green (video) and red and white (audio). A component cable is not included with the PlayStation 2.
    • S-Video... This is not a very common connector in new TVs. It provides better picture quality than the composite connector, but inferior to the component connector. The plug on an S-Video cable is usually yellow and has multiple pins. The S-Video cable supplied with the PlayStation 2 includes an S-Video plug as well as red and white plugs for audio transmission.
    • RF... This is the worst way to connect your PlayStation 2 to a TV or VCR as it provides poor picture quality. The RF cable connects to the coaxial input of a TV or VCR (the input to which the antenna is connected). Use this connector only if you cannot connect to any other connector.
  2. 2 Buy the cable you want.
    • The new PlayStation 2 comes with a composite cable. If you need a different cable, buy it. Make sure the cable you buy is suitable for the PlayStation 2, as the PlayStation 2 requires a cable with a dedicated plug (at one end of the cable).
    • PlayStation 2 compatible cables will work with any PlayStation 2 model.
  3. 3 Place the PlayStation 2 next to your TV or receiver.
    • Make sure there is plenty of free space around the box; otherwise, the console will overheat. Do not stack the set-top box on top of another electronic device or stack another device on top of the set-top box. Place the attachment vertically so that it takes up less space. Place the set-top box close enough to the TV so that the cables are not strained.
  4. 4 Connect the video cable to the back of the PlayStation 2.
    • The video connector is located in the lower right corner on the back of the STB and on the right on the back of the Slim STB (next to the power cable connector). The connector is labeled “AV MULTI OUT”.
  5. 5 Connect the other end of the video cable to your TV.
    • Pay attention to the markings on the connector on your TV. This will help you properly set up your TV to display the signal from the set-top box. Check the color matching of the plugs and jacks.
    • The audio jack (red and white) may be located far from the video jack.If your TV only supports mono audio, just use the white plug on the audio cable.
    • Note that the component cable has two red plugs. In order not to get confused, lay the cable on the table - the order of colors should be as follows: green, blue, red (video), white, red (audio).
    • If your TV only has a component jack and you only have a composite cable, you can connect the set-top box to the TV. Connect the red and white plugs to the red and white jacks, but connect the yellow plug to the green jack. If the screen displays in black and white, try connecting the yellow plug to the blue or red jack.
    • If you are in Europe, you may need a Euro-AV adapter that will allow you to connect a composite cable to the SCART socket on your TV. This adapter comes with new attachments for sale in European countries.
  6. 6 Connect a digital audio cable (optional.
    • If you have a 5.1 speaker system, you need to connect the “Digital Out (Optical)” digital audio jack on the PS2 to the receiver using a TOSLINK cable. This is only required if you need surround sound and have the necessary hardware. You can find the digital audio jack next to the video jack on the back of the PlayStation 2.
  7. 7 Connect the power cable to the PlayStation 2.
    • The standard box and the slim box have different power cables. For a standard set-top box, plug one end of the power cable (figure eight) into the power connector on the back of the PlayStation 2, and plug the other end of the power cable into a power outlet. For a slim set-top box, plug the power cable into the yellow DC IN jack on the back of the PlayStation 2, plug in the power adapter, and then plug the power cord into a power outlet.
    • The cable must be long enough so that it is not overstretched.
  8. 8 Connect an Ethernet cable if you want to play games over the network.
    • Some PlayStation 2 games can be played online and require a network connection via Ethernet. The slim set-top box has a built-in Ethernet adapter, while the standard set-top box requires a network adapter.
    • You don't need to configure your network at the system level. Every online game will set up a network when trying to connect to it.
    • Many online PS2 games no longer function on the internet, and their servers have long since been shut down.

Part 2 of 2: Launching the game on the PlayStation 2

  1. 1 Connect your controller to your PlayStation 2.
    • You will need either an official controller for the PlayStation 2 (aka DualShock 2) or a third-party controller designed for the PS2. All new PlayStation 2 consoles come with one DualShock 2 controller. You cannot use a PS1 controller for PS2.
  2. 2 Insert a memory card (optional).
    • If you want to save the passage of games, you will need to insert a memory card). Official memory cards are 8 MB in size, which is enough to save the passage of a large number of games. You can purchase larger third-party cards, but they are more likely to fail and can damage the stored data. However, there are also official memory cards of a larger size, 16 or 32 MB. You can also use an external hard drive instead of a memory card, but you will need a card to install the hard drive software.
    • You can play games without a memory card or HDD, but the gameplay will be lost when you turn off the console or exit the game.
    • Memory cards are inserted directly above the controller. Make sure to insert the card with the label facing up.
  3. 3 Turn on your TV and tune to the correct input signal.
    • Turn on the TV and tune to the input jack that the PlayStation is connected to 2). If you've connected your PS2 to a VCR or receiver, make sure the VCR or receiver is set to the correct input signal and that the TV is set to receive the signal from the VCR or receiver.
  4. 4 Turn on your PS2.
    • Press the power button on the front of the PlayStation 2. The LED will turn green and if the TV is set to the correct input signal, you will see an animated PS2 logo. If the game is not inserted, the PS2 system menu will open.If the game is inserted, it will start automatically.
  5. 5 Insert the game.
    • Press the Eject button on the front of the PlayStation 2 to either eject the tray (standard PS2) or open the lid (slim PS2). Place the game on a tray or spindle. Close the cover (on the Slim attachment) or press the Eject button to close the tray (on the STD).
    • Do not check out the game while playing it, otherwise it may close without saving.
    • When inserting and removing the game, do not touch the surface of the disc to prevent scratches and other damage. This way the game will last you longer.
  6. 6 Play the game in progressive scan mode (via component cable only).
    • If the PlayStation 2 is connected with a component cable, you can use the progressive scan mode (480p). This will result in a clearer picture, but this mode is only supported by some games. Press and hold ∆ + X after the PlayStation 2 logo appears when launching the game. If the game supports progressive scan, you will see instructions on how to turn it on. There are no system settings for progressive scan.
    • A complete list of games that support progressive scan can be found here.
