It is very convenient to boil water in electric kettles for tea, other drinks or meals. When the water boils over and over again inside the kettle, hard deposits form on the sides of the kettle. These deposits slow down the heating of the kettle and can get into tea or food. To clean the kettle, use a vinegar or lemon solution and baking soda to remove stubborn stains from the inside and outside of the kettle.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: A vinegar solution

  1. 1 Prepare a vinegar solution. The vinegar will help descale the kettle and remove hard water deposits. Mix equal proportions of water and white vinegar. Fill the kettle half or 3/4 full with this solution.
  2. 2 Boil the solution in a kettle. To clean the inside of the kettle and remove solid deposits, turn on the kettle with the solution inside. Bring it to a boil.
    • If a thick layer of limescale builds up inside the kettle, add more vinegar. Boil the kettle again.
  3. 3 Leave the kettle to soak. When the water in the kettle boils, turn off the kettle and unplug it. Leave the kettle on for 20 minutes to allow the solution to soak into it. After 20 minutes, pour out the solution.
    • If a thick layer of scale has formed in the kettle, leave the solution for a longer period.
  4. 4 Wipe the inside of the kettle. Use a non-metallic sponge or cloth to clean the inside of the kettle (but only after the vinegar solution has softened the sediment on the kettle walls).
    • When doing this, try to avoid heating elements on the bottom of the kettle.
  5. 5 Rinse the kettle to remove the vinegar. Rinse the kettle with water. Repeat this process several times to completely remove the vinegar odor. Wipe the inside of the kettle with a rag and then let it dry.
    • If the kettle still tastes or smells of vinegar, boil the water in it and then pour it out. This should fix the problem. If the vinegar smell or taste persists, boil the water a couple more times.

Method 2 of 3: Other solutions

  1. 1 Use a lemon solution. If the kettle manufacturer has explicitly stated that the kettle cannot be cleaned with vinegar, use lemon instead. Prepare a solution of lemon and water. Squeeze the lemon into the water, then cut the lemon into wedges and place them in the water.Fill the kettle with this solution.
    • Boil water and leave the kettle for an hour to soak the solution into it.
    • Pour out the water and rinse the kettle.
    • You can use lime instead of lemon.
  2. 2 Make a baking soda solution. Mix baking soda with water to make another cleaning solution. Add a teaspoon of baking soda to the water. Pour the solution into an electric kettle and bring it to a boil.
    • Let the kettle soak in the solution for 20 minutes, then pour out the solution and rinse the kettle with cold water.
    • This should remove the limescale inside the kettle.
  3. 3 Use a proprietary kettle descaler. If you want to use a proprietary cleaner, buy kettle cleaner online, at your hardware store, or at the supermarket. Dilute the cleaner with water according to the instructions for use and boil the solution in a kettle.
    • Leave the solution in the teapot to soak in.
    • Rinse the kettle with cold water.

Expert advice: “Any soda will work as a simple and effective home remedy. Fill the kettle with regular soda, bring to a boil, then cool for about 45 minutes. After that, rinse and rinse the kettle as usual, and the kettle should shine as clean again! "

Method 3 of 3: Keeping your kettle clean

  1. 1 Clean the outside of the kettle with dish soap. Use a regular dish detergent to clean the outside of the kettle. Rinse the outside of the kettle with detergent and then wipe it down with a damp cloth. Make sure that no detergent gets into the kettle.
    • Wash the kettle once a week or so.
    • Due to the heating element, the kettle must not be immersed in water.
  2. 2 Wipe the kettle with olive oil. If your kettle is made of stainless steel, polishing will help restore its shine. Use olive oil to make the kettle shine. Squeeze some oil onto a soft cloth and rub the outside of the kettle. Rub gently so as not to accidentally scratch the surface of the kettle.
  3. 3 Clean the kettle often. With frequent use, hard deposits will start to build up inside the kettle, especially if you use hard water. This can cause limescale flakes in your tea or coffee and slower operation of the kettle. To keep the kettle working properly, clean it at least once every few months.
